please HELP- rear third
« on: Sep 04, 2006, 05:21:01 PM »
okay so a while back I had issues with my rear third in my toyota...It ended up being oil squirting out of the pinion seal. So I pulled the third, replaced the seal and everything else the goes along with it. then I had t welded up for me. Put it all back together and went to drive it today and was getting some crazy a$$ noises. Brought it home and pulled the rear fill plug to make sure my oil level was good, and when I did that you could see metal shavings on the fill plug   WTF is going on...I pulled the drain plug and a little bit more metal shavings came out....I'm about to give up, I need help please.....Oh and a quick note, I put the rear end up on jacks again and spun the wheels freely and it looks like the pinion spins lop-sided  is this normal: because I've come to the conclusion that some how the pinion got bent and is just chewin up my gears....and help would be appreciated
If you aren't going all the way, why even go at all?

oh please tell me they pulled the ring gear off the carrier befor they welded it,  because it sounds like they just had the hole 3rd on the bench and started welding,  warping the carrier  and causing it to eat the gears UP

Yeah, I would suggest new gears, new pinion bearings, new carrier, or grab a spool.  It is only a couple hour job to redo the 3rd, well worth it to know it is all new.

coyote, we DID pull the ring off the carrier when we welded up the rear end. We took 1/4" pieces of plate and welded the :pokinit: out of them on both sides of the spiders, allowing them to hit all corners of the gears...

CTENG in KS, man I hate to say it but I think you are right....This is why I hate to buy other peoples junk...never know what the hell the other person did to it....been having problems since I got the damn thing

Do you have something with a good straight edge so you can check for warpage?  Are you sure the gears are set up correctly?  Pull it, get some pics of the pinion and pull the punion bearing and the race out.

What about the oil splash guards in the housing? Maybe one of them slipped off and got chewed up? Sounds like your pinion is screwed though.

minisimp....yes I plan on pulling the rear end tomorrow to see the damage, I'm hoping a splash gaurd is knocked off or something...I believe the carrier and ring are still set-up fine...there is a few things I am unsure of..one, the flange was not seated completly down when I tightended it up.... two, the for sure one in my head is, the pinion is bent because even when I bought the truck and brought it home, the rear flange looked thingy-eyed, and three the oil splash guards, but that still would answer why the flange spins thingy-eyed....so much for buying anothers junk eh.....but I guess this is the oppurtunity to buy so cryo-ed gears from longfield!!!

Just take out that carrier and swap it into a good third with a good pinion.
I've got a spare I'm bringing to MCR5.

I didn't think it was okay to swap gear types...thought the ring and pinion were like a match set that only the set you bought would match up???? If that's the case that would save me lots on money, which I don't have...damn college books!!!!!

have you pulled the third out yet? did you set the back lash correctly? from what i have been told if the back lash is too lose it will make noise and will break the gears.  i blew up my third coming back from a july 4th camping trip. broke every tooth off the both ring and pinion. didn't break my spool. this was after i took the driveshaft out and in front wheel drive.
