Tranny ? + whatever else
« on: Aug 27, 2006, 12:05:24 AM »
I was just reading the info in the twin stick conversion and it says that it won't work with a W56 c or d...how do I know which one I have.
My truck is an 87' w/ a 22r.

I'll have some more stupid ?'s soon...this is my first build and i wanna do it myself...atleast mostly! :driving:

look on the metal tag  on the firewall just behind the valvecover,  it will tell you the tranny and axle / paint codes

close to the bottom of the metal tag

if it was a efi  its a w56  if its a turbo its a R151

the birf elim kits are only marginally as strong as the stock birfs.. the problem, with that, is if you break an axle or yoke, no one on your run is likelyto have a spare, and you cant buy jsut those axles singly....

look into bobby long 30 splines for the utmost in strength, marlins also got some new inner shafts as well, those are very strong

would that be everything that i need to upgrade? I dont have a whole lot of money to spend and i like to build the axles strong enough to where i wont need spare parts...i dont drive it to break it...i know i dont have the money to fix it all the time.  Given the right amount of money what do i need to make these things damn near bulletproof. :driving:

also what should i do about my drivelines with say 5 or 6 inch springs?

rule number 1

keep it simple,  your starting out,  keep your truck under 35 inch tires  and dont lock the front,  LOCK the rear diff,  then get out there and run some trails

the guys that break birfs all the time are the ones trying to crawl over boulders bigger than there trucks

ive had my rig for 12 years and never broke a birf

and you're running the stock birfs still? I'm planning on spending around $4000 over the next 5 months...so i'd kinda like to do it right once and keep from breaking them later...

$4000,   elocker for the rear that leaves $2700,   dual cases, depending on your skills this can be fro $600  to $1500

that leaves plenty for tires and front gears
