tranny identification...
« on: Jan 20, 2008, 10:07:06 AM »
ok i got this transmission and transfer case and i was told it was out of and 85 or 86 and i saw the engine that it came off of and it was a 22re so i was just wondering if this is the same transmission that i have on my truck which is an 85 22re pickup the only thing that has me questioning it is how the top of the transfer case has a block off plate and the tranny shifter and the regular shifter are on the same plate.. is this how they all are, from looking up under my truck it looks diferent it looks like the trans shifter is over the trans and the 4x4 shifter is over the transfer case....

That is a forward shifting transfer case which more than likely came off of a 84 - 88 carbed.  You need to have the rear case a top shifting transfercase, Marlin sells the conversion kit to make that happen.  Here is the link off Marlins site to help with some other ?'s you might have.

well in my truck now i have a top shift i am pretty sure well almost positive i have an 85 22re and the shifter is on top of the tcase so im assuming that is a top shift, so would a that forward shifting tcase work behind my tranny and in front of my top shift? like the first case forward shift and the rear case top shift?

if you convert it to a topshift,  which will be easy  since you have to completely disassemble  to install the adapter  to it

your 85  22RE  has a w56a,  btw

ok thanks... so its pretty easy to convert that tcase to a top shift so that i can just run the top shift i have now and that one as a top shift once i go duals? that way i have 2 top shifts... and also how pricey is the conversion?

to answer your question, that is a W56...either the C or D variant.  You can tell by the style of the shifter plate.

I called MC about a week ago to get that kit he does not offer it anymore due to lack of parts. I ended up doing some fab work to convert it from forward shift to top and it works great.
