Best fix for a saggy 4Runner
« on: Mar 10, 2006, 03:34:07 PM »
Hello all, what is the best solution for my sagging rear end????  '88 4Runner, bone stock!

Springs?          Where to get them?  Whos are best
Add-a-Leaf?     What kind?
Shackels?        Or is that just the cheap way out?
Rearc?            Or is the metal too old?

I would like to put and 1 or 2" lift to the rear as well.  Just building a rig to go fishing with my kids in the high country!

Thanks, Jeremiah

your best bet if you have stock  springs  ,i'm assuming you have leaf springs,  go to the yard and get some Chevy s10  or F150 springs  2WD then remove your springs and add a couple of the chevy or ford 2wd springs in with your stock upper springs

good deal,  yea  you can put the 2wd s10 springs back there and it will flex nice,  or you can  take the s10 packs apart and put the lower leafs in the toyota spring pack

Is there a specific year of S10 or F150 i should be looking for.  Do i just keep my top leaf and use ??? number of the new springs?  How much lift should i anticipate.  I am only looking for stock or a little more.  How many leaves total?

Thanks for your help

I would like to put and 1 or 2" lift to the rear as well.  Just building a rig to go fishing with my kids in the high country

Well to just eliminate the sag which is typical of 4Runners due to the heavy rear-end for a whopping $70.00 bucks you could throw in a set of shackles if all you are doing is light wheeling. They are an easy install and should take about 1/2 hour to complete. The other suggestions  would require more work than it's worth to create the minor lift you desire. I don't know your mechanical skill level but a 12 year old computer geek could install shackles. Then once you do that if you decide you want to lift the front to match you could crank the torsion bars in a tad to lift the front. Then you'll want to put larger tires on and then you'll want to lock the rear, then the front and next thing you know you'll be doing an sas conversion.

 :rofl2:

All joking aside just do the shackle lift on the rear, your current ride will remain the same and you'll be happy with the look. If you carry a lot of gear I'd try to get it a slight bit higher on the rear than the front so that when you are off in the boonies with all that gear your rig sits level, and the rest of the junk I said will slowly start eating into your brain especially the first time you lift a tire on that IFS. Lockers or limited-slips will provide excellent traction aid to a front-end that gives very little travel.

Hey I have never made it to the YARD yet. But The 86-88 Isuzu troopers have the same pinout as our Runners. and their springs are quite a bit stouter. you never see those troopers squatin like that, and they are heavier.
I am gonna buy 2 of those here soon and that should remedy the drag  :moon:  our runners do.

And if you wanna keep it stock for now that would be much more comfortable than the add-a-leafs. U-pull-it here in Oregon wants 15 a spring, which is worth it to me.

Thanks for all of the good info.  Right now the springs are reverse arcing on the stock overlaods!!!  So i dont think shakles will do much to improve ride.  i wll look into the trooper springs as well as the F150 and s10.  Looking at a friends F150 this weekend and it looked pretty straight forward.

Rocksurfer, i already got the bug, had it a long time, just got the runner and this is the one i will slowly build to what i want.  Lockers and all...

Good write up http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=811919&page=3&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=1 for adding coil springs to the rear to help with the saggy rear that the 4Runners have.  For a stock runner, look for the stock rear spring from a Jeep TJ.  I have 5” lift and used the front stock spring from a TJ and still have good flex and I sit level now.  You can get the spring for cheap or free from any shop doing lifts.  Starting at pg 2 for the TJ springs but lots of great info from a few of us.

Yeah reverse arch on the rears is not good. Sounds like they're done. An add-a-leaf will probably just cause those ancient suckers to bend and break. Do some research before running out and buying other vehicles springs, some require relocating the mounts.

That was an interesting link on the coils. Some of the dual coil setups looked a little suspect (no retainer bolts on the top or bottom of the spring  :shake_head: ) that being said, the nice setup by "Zuk" is being marketed and sold for around $200. The one question I would have is how the coils perform off road. Most of the rigs seemed to be worried about their ride stance and ability to haul heavy loads, not off road performance.

Here is Zuk's link: http://gearinstalls.com/dc.htm

Now the single coil set up is very interesting. I looks like you get the lift and it should articulate good. :

All Right, here it is.   I got 5" of lift from sagging position on brand new (~1500mi) '06 Rubicon springs.  And they fit perfectly between the bumpstops with no modification.

Check it out...

cut about 4" off the long coils.....let the leafpacks support some of the weight.

by the way, I'm pretty sure you're gonna love the simplicity of what you just did. ZUK
