Here is my current situation that I need help with
I have a 1980 4X4 long bed, with a 20r in it. Failed smog check last year and was tagged as a "gross polluter" running rich too many H/C
I took it to get a diag. check (carbex in clovis), they said carb bad, EGR good, Smog pump good, vacuum advance muffed
I rebuilt the head, fixed all exhaust leaks, got rebuilt carb from (
http://carburetorexchange.com/index.php) , rerouted all vacuum lines, replaced distributer and vacuum advance, got idle as close as I could (still had vacuum problems),and timing dead on, change oil, plugs, wires, pcv valve, air filter, fuel filter.
Take it back to Carbex yesterday to get diag and pretest. and have new cat put on, they say needs more vacuum routing (vacuum I knew about) and the is carb acting funny, but they thought they could get it to pass. They put on a new cat pre-test it and it passes, run it to a test only and it fails. Running to rich according to Carbex. They call me and tell me that the carb that I had gotten is no good. Its running to rich, H/C were in low 3.1's for the pre test. Nox is passing with flying colors.
Is the carb bad? I dont know anything about Carbs. and i supect I am being fed bullshirt because they want $400 to rebuild the Carb. that is supposedly rebuilt. So i need some local help please.
Yes I read bigmikes post on how to pass smog, but the info on retarding the timing and turning up idle is based on F.I. trucks. not carbed. Unless I am reading it wrong. Also I dont want to tinker with a supposedly tuned rebuilt carb. Can someone local please fickin help me. I think Carbex just wants the $400 buck to rebuild a new carb, and knows if I run reich Ill eat my cat so that would be another $115. I am hopeing there is some one local who can take a look at the carb, and see what they think. Mabye help me adjust it.
Thanks,
Justin
