What year trannys to look for?

I am looking on car-part.com for trannys up to what year will fit my 84.  :help:

84-87  should bolt right in

your ideal tranny would be a w56  or R151  they are the strongest,  but anything from 84-90  ,  if its a 22R RE RTE the tranny will work

the easiest tranny swap will be a G52 or G54 from any '84-87 carbed pickup.  if you want to beef up a little, you can put a W56 in, but you'll have to change to a top shift t-case on most models('85-88 were top shift, '89-95 were forward shift but the rods are shorter so they won't work with a G tranny without a shift rod swap) and relocate the shifter holes.

OK thanks guys I think I am going to the boneyard and get a G54 already have clutch and flywheel from marlin.

get a g52 they are cheap and hold up fine

i have a 84 extra cab with forward shift .i have been looking into using a w56 d .but cant seem find dimensions showing shifter placement.
so are you saying i should get the tcase from the w56d also? the advantage to this trans is it has a counter shaft brake .making going from
first to reverse faster and smother?so have I got  it right do i need more schooling.
