20R motor in a baja bug!!!
« on: Oct 03, 2005, 08:24:07 PM »
Howdy!!! I am new to this site. And from what Ive seen its a great site, I am installing a 20R motoor in my baja bug. In a volkswagon the pick up coil in the distributor is wired staright to the coil, On a 79 celica motor you need the ignition control module. My question is can I get around using the stock brain??? Maybe a aftermarket ignition module and a distributor??? Any help would be great....

Wish I could help, but don't know the answer to your ?. Maybe BigMike will post up soon.
Are you sure you wouldn't like to a Supercharged MR2 motor in there? I've got one of those with the wiring and ecu.

Thanx fireball, But I dropped some coins,  had this one balanced and blueprinted, I kept it mostly stock, But in my bug it should haul,Im going from a stock 1600 VW motor to this. I was told to go with MSD ignition box and distributor, I just want to make sure I dont have to have the stock box also... :shocking: I dont think I will but I just want to be sure...

are you talking about the ignitor box,  thats attached to the coil??  it acts like a transformer to generate a more powerful spark

never seen a 79 anything yota with a "control module"

I took out the stock ignitor and am running an msd ignition box on my 22r.  It was really easy to wire in and runs great.  I also have the stock ignitor if you wanna buy it

msd should work good!  what year 20R are you running?  if it's older than '77 or '78, please tell us you're using a distributor off a late model 20R or a 22R with electronic ignition, points suck!  the toyota distributors with electronic ignition are super simple and unbelievably reliable, should be a good pair with the MSD box!

Thanx for the info, The motor is out of a 79 celica, And I agree with the points, They suck. I went to electronis ignition in my Volkswagon motor and it worked really well. I should have it done in time for the poker run at the end of Oct. Hopefully well get to see what it will do.

I told my bug loving coworker about this project and he replied, "what, does he wanna do wheelies with it?".  Kinda made me chuckle.  I love the idea but would have started with a 22r block and made a hybrid, or gone efi for the cool(er) factor!

Im not too worried about doing wheelies. My chassis is extended in the front 5 inches and the rear is 3 inches longer through the trailing arms. and the front is widened 8 inches and the rear 6 inches. I had the motor sitting on the garage floor for about 15 years, out of a wrecked celica. My VW motor has got a lot of hard off road miles on it. It would have been cheaper to go with a bigger VW motor, But then I lose the reliability. And I obviously like to fabricate so here I am. I hope to have it fired up this weekend, Im waiting on the new aluminum radiator, PICS WILL FOLLOW SOON... :beerchug:   :smack:

Do you have any parts you want to sell off the old motor?  I have a 71 super with the stock motor and would like to give it a bit of a kick but not loose to much in gas mileage.
