my best guess would be that the flanges are different-can be drilled, but if your '79 has a different length tranny, you could be paying a visit to the driveshaft shop.  My G and W series were the same lenght, but you might have an L series which might be different lengths, give it a shot, can't hurt...

Yes he's right, all you'll need to do is drill the flange(s), but for c/v movement, and '86 "MIGHT" work, but if you have any lift at all (susp) you'll need the 79-85 style c/v front driveshafts, but there not as rare as you might think, go to your local wrecking yard and get a '4' cyl 90-95 4runner front D.S., or a 89-95 '4' cyl p/u front drive shaft, they're like identical to the 84-85, big movement on the C/V end, the '86-89 4runners (4 or 6 cyl) and the '86-88 p/u's(4 or 6 cyl) front shafts need to be very modified or dismanteled andGROUND DOWN! Remember that it MUST be from a 4 cyl 90-95 4x4 front!!!!!

ok thanks,
this morning i stumbled across a 86  pickup complete except for the engine,  it has the g52 trans,  i think i'll grab it so i can get rid of that L-43 4 speed,   3800rpms on the interstate is a bit much :smack: need a 5spd and some new 33's
