Cub Scout Pinewood Derby
« on: Jan 20, 2006, 06:00:09 PM »
My twin boys have completed their pinewood derby cars for the year. The big race is tomorrow (1-21). :driving:  Dad doesn't have much say in the "theme" of the car and they don't allow oversized tires or springs of any kind, so a Formula Toy is out. :therethere:

I'm not worried about twin #1. He decided he wanted a skateboard car with a little figurine on top riding it. Easy stuff.  :)

It is twin #2's car that might cause a little controversy. He wanted a car in the shape of a Barbecue with flames. OK, no problem, a little paint and some stick on flames and we are done. No, no. Twin 2 wants Barney (you know the purple guy) to be BBQ'd going down the track!!! :gap:  Barney is fun when you are 3 or 4, but when you are 7, he is enemy #1. So Dad finds a Barney; we build the car and it turns out great, or so we thought. :lipsrsealed:

Mom states that our "BBQ Barney" may somehow promote violence. :nonono: So stay tuned for some pictures and the results. We might get kicked out of the Cub Scouts over the controversial car. :talkingn:

I used to race Pinewood Derby cars when I was younger.  My cars were so slow I just could not make them go fast, I hated it. I took 1st in unlimited show three years in a row though. :yupyup

pretty shure the key to the pine wood derby is to make yer car heavy...think it was like 5oz max or something. you can drill holes and fill with lead. they also make some tires that have a razor edge...causes less rolling resistance.

fer the airplane...make them light.

its been years since ive been in scouts...but i think im right.

On with the pictures :)
We had a great time. It turned out that Barney needed to go on a little diet to get down to 5.0 ozs. Here is before the race (and before we cut his legs off  :flamer:)

Barney was actually pretty fast and he won his first heat. But he lost the next two. :(

The twins had a blast but they announced they wanted fast cars for next year. :driving:
The problem is, Dad only knows slow. :turtle:

I remember the key to those races was lead tape. Get it at a golf store, it is used to weigh the shaft towards the head of the club, you can tear it and stick it on the nose or whever you need weight. But then again that was many years ago.

Funny story, when I was like 7? I was in the cub scouts and we had our weigh in at a local warehouse. There was an upstairs they didnt let anyone into. Turns out later that night the place got busted for being a grow-house. One of the cub scout's dad's is a seattle cop and turned the place in.

Jim next year we can make the boys cars FAST. I was region champ 3 years running as a kid and Zack won the Pack last year but we were out of town during regionals and couldn't go. he didn't want to do cub scouts this year. With the new lathe we can make the wheels true and polish the axles. and a few more tricks.

Great!!!! I'll have another opportunity to spend time in the Izzy shop.  A pinewood deby car on the lift might be a wee bit of overkill though.

Man, I remeber those days.  I went from Tiger Cub to Eagle, all the way through   Think I had 5 or six of those cars.  Each ear they got better, then when my brother got into the scouts, his kicked :moon:  wonder why???  Mom had about 8 years experience by the time he did his last car.  He won the pack that year

This is my very first deby so I kept it simple this year. I just finished my last coat of clear tonight, got the wheels and axles polished and weigh in at a dead-nuts 5oz. I also loweredit to just over 3/8" GC and streched the WB about 1 inch. I just need to install my air intake, exhaust tips and wheels and it will be done.

FYI: I believe one of the rules is that you must be able to view the entire nail/axle shaft.  :psss:

chuck up the axles in your drill polish them with a comet/ajax and water mixture make a paste out of it. do your final polishing with car wax. do the same with the wheel surfaces and the center holes. do not over do the center holes if they become larger it will slow the car down
I used to do awsome at these things. It used to be legal to lubricate the wheels with graphite. but it has been a few years since my scout days.

:flamer:     P.S. that car is hilarious-    :ha_ha:     your kid is cool
