« on: Dec 10, 2019, 01:38:33 PM »
Will an 81 SR5 instrument cluster work in my base model truck with no issues?
Thanks, Mike

SR5 cluster is an easy swap into a base model, as long as the plugs are the same. My 1980 uses round plugs. I believe 82 and 83 use rectangle plugs.

Thanks, from everything I can find it shoulf fit. My truck is an 82 model made in Sept 81. Later on in 82 they switched plugs.

One other thing. If the new cluster has an oil gauge, you need to use the oil sender for the gauge, not the sender for a warning light. https://22reperformance.com/22re-engine-electrical/oil-pressure-sending-unit-for-gauge

I just pulled mine out of the dash. Rectangular plugs, not round.. And then in my reading it seems they changed again in 84. So I may be able to use 82 through early 84.
The one I had been looking at was an early one.

You will need 82-83. When they started 2nd gen trucks in 84 the entire dash and cluster changed.

To clarify this a little. From my personal experience 1979-1981 used round plugs. Late 81-83 used rectangle plugs.

I got lucky and found one in Denver. When it gets here I'll install it.

I have one more question. Too be totally honest I would like to install my old Speedo in the newer cluster. Am I correct that they should interchange?

Do not open that can of worms. I attempted it on one of mine and the darn thing never worked again so I swapped another cluster in.

So I take it that your Speedo would not work in the new cluster?

Speedometer worked fine. The odometer and trip meter popped out. I obviously messed something up during the swap. Considering you are kind of new to this I would hed the warning and just roll with what it is. Especially if you paid for this new cluster. I was playing with some spares and attempting to make a nice cluster it match closer the mileage of my engine.

Mwhite49, how did the swap end up going? Did you just change your plug ends to round and let it bump or did you also tackle trying to swap the original speedometer?
