My Toyota Factory Repair Manual says:

For a stock 22R

Valve clearance (Cold)
Intake 0.20mm (.008 in.)
Exhaust 0.30mm (.012 in)

I thought it is very common knowledge among the early 22R people that .007” and .011” is the cold engine initial adjustment for valve lash.  :dunno:

Adjusting valve lash on a 22 has always been a topic of discussion because of rocker tick.  I adjust my cold engine at .007” and 011”.  Then drive it for 30 minutes, then re-check and adjust for a snug quiet and balanced rocker tick at close to spec.

The actual physical measurement with a feeler gauge is obviously subjective.  And, my adjustment in sunny Arizona when it’s 100 d F in July and someone else’s adjustment in Minnesota in December will most likely be slightly different.  I like my rockers to sound balanced, so I use my stethoscope and make the lash whatever it takes to get their “tick” sounding balanced for all 8 rockers.

Thanks.  That spec is what I've done in the past but just wanted to verify it on the board since I"m new to 22R discussions. I hadn't considered ambient temperature though.  Thats a good point.  My service manual says adjust hot but doesn't mention cold.
