Early or late model IFS box for crossover steering
« on: Aug 18, 2016, 11:21:03 AM »
Hi all-

Some of you may have seen my rookie saga in failing to mod a driveshaft to work in my 80.  Since I am also wanting to have suspention and high steer, I figured I should take care of that first as axle may be slightly moved/drop angle may change slightly between my old Rough Country lift and new (probably) OME suspension.  Basically, I don't want to spend $500 on a shaft that is useless after new suspension.

So, I need a box for the high steer.  I know there are two types of IFS box.  There is a yard down the street from me that will pull one w/ power that is in a 90 4Runner....I believe that would be the new style with the longer input shaft.  Which is preferred?  They want $100 for it...sounds about right.  That plus rebuild kit and I'm at around $200.  Also, who do ya'll buy the kits from?

BTW - looking for the 4" minimal lift to support high steer, if that matters.

iirc, the older boxes 86-88 have a larger bearing on the input shaft, a stronger unit, however the newer box has a higher line pressure per fsm, either way, I would try to buy power steering pump and box as a pair. if the box isn't leaking, unless your going to tap for hydro assist, I would leave it alone. I think the newer style has a bleeder valve on box too.

the later style box also has a quicker turn ratio I think

I have seen this stated elsewhere.  Thanks for the info.

So any opinion on preferred set up from one to the other?

well....., I'm running a early non tapped box with 3rz stock pump at the current moment, however I'm gather parts for late model box, tc style pump w/ hydro assist. I tapped the box and rebuilt it, just need 1 ram mount, and a pulley, cooler and a reservoir

Be sure to mock everything up before you mount your box.  I have my kid's box mounted to where the stock style pitman arm hits the springs and the flat one hits the frame.  Could have been easily avoided.

Not all late boxes came with the bleeder, they only did that for a few years. What years, heck I do not know, my 90 had it!!
