LF advice on 95 4runner transmission/tcase
« on: Oct 15, 2016, 10:40:01 PM »
I picked up a 95 4Runner with the 22RE recently for $400. I drove it home, but barely. It needs a rebuild. Anyways, I want to turn it into my trail rig and I have been learning all I can about what I can and cannot do with it. I am a bit unsure on how to go about implementing a dual case setup. It currently has a G58 transmission with chain drive tcase so I want to swap in a better transmission.

From what I have gathered I would need either a R151F out of a turbo model (+ input gear), a W56 or a R151F bellhousing along with an R150F (+ input gear). Which would be better as far as performance and reliability?

I know I will need two gear drive tcases with the crawler box (maybe not 'need', but it would be better than gear + chain, right). I just need one to match the transmission as far as top/fwd shift, and then a top shift for the rear case, correct?

Aside from that, I think I will just need a new cross member, change driveshaft lengths, and a tcase mount. Not sure if I will need to change the gas tank or not? Anything else I am missing? If it matters, I plan on doing a SAS too.

I have done a LOT of searching, but some things are still unclear to me. I see so many people get flamed for asking questions that have an answer SOMEWHERE, but not everyone is a google-fu expert :)

Thanks.

I'd recommend trying this. It's a custom google search I created that only searches yota related forums:
