Thats not totally true.  When the engine is under load the whole drive train gets equal load.  So no matter what the torque is transferred throughout the whole drivetrain. 
True the tcases do take most of the load but the trans will always take the load of the engine torque.  I personally wouldnt want to wheel in 5th gear all the time.  Its just not designed for high torque.
