anyways i got a thorley tri y header back to a hollowed out cat and a flowmaster 40 and i think its perfect. not too loud and not too quiet.

I know, I know, I was goofin' on you to see if you would catch it...  :)   :beer:

I was lucky enough to score a $250 truck that allready had a good tri Y header and since it's an '80 20r it has no cat.  I put a glasspack in place of my muffler on my '80 with the stock pipe.  It sounds just like a cheap lawn mower...  really turns heads on the trail!  I'm going for the comic relief/trail sleeper sound so I stuck with the 1 5/8" stock pipe to keep the sound goofy.  I would say the strait through muffler actually helped even with the stock pipe.
