I would totaly agree about 1/3 of the people likeing the 22rte engine due to the head gasket failures and turbocharger cracking problems. But i will say that when these motors are running rite they run very well. B4 i rebuilt my engine i hated the powerband that it had and most of it was due to lack of cmpression that these motors came with from the factory (7.5 to 1) so i put diffrent pistons in it that raised it to 8.6 to 1 and wow what a diffrence that was! the rte motor has alot of trial and error untill you find the rite combo. the way my truck is set up now i build 7psi by the time im at 2000 rpm due to the garret quick spool charger and im at 14psi by 3000 rpm. im normaly wheeling in the 1700 to 3500 range so that works perfect 4 me. this is my 6th rte engine so i have went through my error moments from blowing headgaskets left and rite to puting 3 turbos on in a week lol. I just cant pull myself away from the turbos rush of power. there is know better fealing than when you are getting ready to climb a nasty slick muddy hill and u know tha u can launchin in 3rd gaer 4low and never run out of power or when u are street driving this truck and unsuspectng honda is next to u and u can smokem with a big toyota on swampers. i dont know what kind of wheeling u do but im into the hill climbing and trails so if i was into rocks this setup probly wouldent be as good. like u said b4 running these engines are all personal prefrence by far. As for the 3rz swap that would b stone reliable swap into any 1st or 2nd gen yota
