This also happens quite often with Rally racing. It's sad, but the crowd wants to be a dozen feet from purpose-built vehicles that are going often in excess of 100mph. One missed turn or a bad slide on some gravel and you end up doing more than just rolling over on your side.
I'm going to an auto race this October with my son(we do this every year) and there's a real reason that there's 2 inch thick steel rebar and cage 40 ft high in front of the stands. There's always the potential for the crowd getting injured in any motor sport in a worst case scenario.
Just sad all the way around. I hope this doesn't make the driver quit the sport.
