Lunch box refers to auto locking differentials, since they are cheaper than the selectable lockers.  I have one in the front of my '91, it makes all kinds of noise when the hubs are locked and everything is in good working order.

As mentioned in the other post just start looking into the front end, and see if anything is loose or worn.
