yes you must remove the ring gear to do it properly, "setup" wont be necessary since the pinion doesnt change, but 'backlash' is changed anytime you remove the carrier, just get it snug to the pinion when you go back in you want only a tiny bit of movement between the ring and pinions


most people do it with it all together.
