whoever said the fuel filter idea is right, mine did the same thing and i couldnt figure out what the hell it was. it does it anytime you are driving at any rpm, studders with black smoke then kick back to life. talked to the mechanic at the toyota dealorship and he told me right away that it was the fuel filter. they will get clogged and starve the motor=loss of power, then get a burst of dirty fuel=black smoke, then a kick=cleaner fuel coming back in.
