The cage or the labor? I found a deal on the cage (DOM) on TTORA. Labor at the shop is 75 an hr.

I will be sure to post some pics.

It looks like Adam at 4xInno has posted some newer pics of the internal truck cages on his site. I noticed that last night.

The cage (dom) is runnign 599 right now shipping not included. The frame tie in kit was also included in the deal so that was a plus.

Yea I was talking about the cage.

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me, I don't have a tube bender that's why I was curious I'm just trying to find a way to inexpensively get a good cage without spending lots of $$$$

I'm hoping its not to labor intensive. Dave might put me in the poor house at 75 bucks an hour.

Got the truck back from Brave Motorsports. I'm very impressed with Daves work. Didn't put the grab handle on right now. They seemed like they would be in the way (of my head)in one spot. I need to get some bar padding for sure. He didn't tie the cage to the frame due to my Ghetto Fab sliders and some body mount interference. When I get some new sliders I will get them tied in then.

Here are a couple pics:

I have to have the interior back together by wednesday night so I can wheel this weekend.

Weather was awesome. Saturday was the mid 60's and breezy.

We hit some Pretty good stuff: Twister about 3 times, the backside where Jason flopped a few years ago. Going down JP Expressway was awesome. I got back at Whatever from last year with some guidance from Jason. Shake Rattle and Roll was good fun. Clydes Ravine was good as usual. Did all the regular stuff mainly. Saw an FJ break a tierod in Twister. I did the rock garden for the first time.

I won some 5/16 x 100 Firewire Synthetic winch line.

Carnage included my cell phone, a little body damage, A TC leak and driveline rattle.

Going to look at that stuff this week.

So on to the problem at hand.

I have a terrible rattle coming from the TC or Transmission. I have been searching non stop through numerous forums (MC, Pirate, TTORA, YT)

I need to find some answers:

To start off:

New dual TC install all the bells and whistles, MC 2.28, 4.7's, MC07 non rotated adapter, MC 30 spl front output, Longfield rear output, Daves Twin sticks, new bearings, the 4.7s had a little mileage on them but looked fine
Mounted on a Sky's OR TC X-member, on 2- 4x inno TC mounts

I went from a 2 piece rear shaft to a one piece shaft.  Upon start up everything was working well no noises and all was good. I drove the rig approximately 300 miles round trip and wheeled it pretty hard. the noise started after getting to park. I noticed an oil leak coming from the TC. After getting back to my house only 2 quarts of gear oil come out out of the original 3. You can imagine the mess under the truck. So I drained and replaced the oil. The oil didn't have a burnt smell but was noticeably darker than when it put it in. I strained the oil and didn't see anything out of the ordinary( some metal flake and a little chunk or 2 of ultra grey). I didn't RTV the rear TC flange, So i did that and that fixed the leak.

Description of the noise:

I do get a shudder upon take off in 1st gear (maybe a clutch or TO bearing issue), the rattling is consistently heard on up shifting through the gears only with your foot on the gas. If you let off the accelerator the noise goes away.

I am really leaning towards a bad bearing in the T-case. I was thinking it got starved slightly after the cases lost oil. The driveshaft is in phase, I need to check the rear pinion flange. I will probably pull the rear third since its my spare and I need to re-install the V6 third that got repaired. I can check the rear third for any abnormalities.

This is the best post I found that describes my situation. I don't think tearing apart the duals just to re-lube everything can fix this.

Any other suggestions?

I am no expert for sure.  I guess I would either put it on jackstands and then have someone run through the gears with the gas pedal down like you drive.  Or pull one driveshaft at a time and go for a drive.

That could eliminate u joints and 3rd members...Then see if the noise changes when going into 4x.  Shift both cases thru all gears, one at a time.  Does it happen all the time?  Then I might agree about the bearings.

In my truck(no crawl box)  the only shudder I ever had was from my clutch.

I pulled the rear driveshaft and ran it through all the 2wd gears (h/h, l/h, and l/l) No noise. Would it matter if there isn't any load on the drivetrain?

I decided to check out the rear 3rd member. Saw some metal on the drain plug when I pulled it. Got the axles pulled and will pull the 3rd tomorrow evening.

I would guess a load specific sound is gears.  trans, tc,  or r&p.  Unless a bearing is shot in the trans or tc......or you ran them dry.....

It disapppeared w/o the rear driveshaft?     You might have found the problem in that third.  I guess you'll find out.

Here are the part numbers from O'Reillys

rotor#96929RGS

caliper #19B2726

Pads #MKD606

You will need the caliper mounting bracket for the calipers as well I dont have the part number for that

The GSM kit has the brackets to mount them to the axle and the brakeline conversion fitting to convert to the banjo bolt fitting needed.

Here are a couple more installed pics. I still need to shorten up my brake line.

Very nice kit guys!  I just need to get my wheels back on and take my red truck for a test drive.

The noise could have come from the one piece drive shaft because there's no where for it to slip. When the suspension drops or at full up travel it's binding.

Did you have the forward shift with both shifters in one base?

No. I had a forward shift in the truck before the duals. I made my duals out of 2 top shift cases.

I see the marlin block off plate on the transmission behind the short throw shifter. Is why I asked cause I have a top shift transfer case and was wondering if there was away to use it?  But I have the forward shift with both the shifters on one base.

i wonder what i can get these for with my store discount :P

and did you use the same P/N left and right on the calipers?

Oreillys uses the 18-4340 as the P/N for the A1 calipers. :]

There should be a left and right designation for the brake calipers

Pulled my rear third a while back

Found a lot of this

Got the rebuilt V6 3rd that I blew up 2 years ago cleaned up and installed a triple drilled pinion flange and double checked all the fasteners

Installed some new led's in the bed (with a lower profile) to replace the old skool halogens.

Blitzpro 6in bars

Still trying to find some time to get it all back together. Fingers crossed that the drivetrain noise goes away

Finished cleaning all the crap out of the rear axle housing last night. I put some compressed air down each axle tube to move any metal down into the pumpkin. I then removed the last 2 axle studs out of the housing. Cleaned up the 3rd mating surface with my dremel and brake cleaner. Then I began replacing the studs with some metric grade 8.8 x 45 mm bolts. I used the same bolts on the front axle when I built it in 2010. I need to pick up a couple more to finish it up this evening along with a couple more cans of brake cleaner. Hopefully i should have this thing rolling on all 4's by the end of the long weekend. I also replaced the o-ring on the VSS as the old one was a little worn and was dribbling gear oil out.

I still need to finish my transmission tunnel shifter cover to keep the heat and fumes from smogging out the cab while driving.

I also picked up some exhaust wrap from a coworker that I need to install along with a set of tube clamps for my light bar

First trip will be to the car wash to blast the undercarriage off with some high pressure soap and hot water.

Im trying to make a wheeling trip @ Hidden Falls on the 20th of the month.

Question on exhaust wrap.  How does it affect rusting issues?  Does it hold water around the pipe?  I'm guessing it would evaporate upon driving, but I'm still wondering.

If I ran through some water and then parked for the night....Is it holding moisture?

 It is kinda wet here.

Not sure on the exhaust wrap. I would think that the moisture would evaporate with the heat. Going to give it a try anyways. My floorboard gets pretty hot.

Andy, I will be in Lubbock that weekend at the Tech/Iowa State football game. If that changes that could be a possibility though.

Started working on the red truck a little.

Blitzpro tube mounts for the Hawk21S led bar

I got my electronic flasher in from superbrightleds and used the Rob method (thanks) and made some short jumpers to get it plugged in on the driver side fuse panel

I also added 3/4" 2 led lights (on each side) to the front marker lights to replace my running lights and wired the existing running light as my blinker. They utilize the same plug so it was a simple swap between the 2 plugs to do so. I finished cleaning up the exterior wiring on the front bumper while I was at it.

I am still in the process of finishing up my Trans tunnel cover and added some heat/noise deadener (GT Mat)to the underside of the top panel.

I got a new set of Delrin frame bushings from Davez Offroad to replace my almost non-existent ones that in there now. I will tackle that this weekend along with installing a set of Sky's banana shackles that I have had for a while.

Thread on Pirate where I found them:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/1227330-delrin-frame-tube-bushings-spring-bushings.html

I have a couple little projects to finish up including the rear axle re-assembly.

Got the Exhaust wrapped from the collector to the front of the muffler

All new rear studs in the rear housing

I have also been working on this bed rack. I added 1.5x1.5x 1/4" aluminum angel to each end. the runners on the outside are 1.5" 6061 Al tubing. I need one more piece to put in the middle of the rack and then need to source something to use for a floor. I havent decided if the rack will go in the Tacoma or the Hilux or both. I need to figure that out.
