5.71's or stay with my 5.29's?
« on: Jul 06, 2010, 10:04:17 PM »
a local wheeler here where i live told me to hold up on welding my rear diff on my 83' yota with 5.29's and 35's because he will be selling the axles from underneath his 84 pickup both locked with 5.71 gears... both axles have welded spiders. i think i'd just install his rear axle, than pull my 5.29's and install his 5.71's in my toyota front.

now this is the kicker, i heard 5.71's are kind of a sketchy gear for trail gunning because the pinion is smaller and more likely to give out versus the 5.29 pinion..... is this true? any of you guys run 5.71's on the trail? i guess i just wanted to know how much weaker it really is

i guess if anything i could just swap back to my 5.29's if i blow the 5.71's out. All depends on how much he wants to sell this set of axles for!!

thanks for the input guys.

some say 1 while others say the other.

I only run 488s oem I have never broke one.
I have broke after mkt 488s 529s 571s..

they will all work and they will all break.

Id say 529s but he@l what do I know.

yeah i sort of figured it was more of a preference over product type deal.

my truck is only a 3-4+ truck, i'm not the climbing waterfalls hangin from my wich strap while pumpin my brakes and running a hand throttle as all 4 tires are wedged into a tight crack type of wheeler quite yet so i think either set will do me just fine.

I run 5.29s no probs, i hear welded spiders can cause issues also, a lot of people say spools hold up better to the abuse

is your truck a DD?  I have never been a fan of welded diffs on DDs.  My buddies have them and dont like driving their rigs on the street because they wear tires way faster.  Just save a little extra and get a aussie/lockright

rear is already welded. with 3 different projects to finish, i don't really wanna spend $300 on a locker for my beat up old toy when i have a beautiful 66 bronco that needs that money instead.

my buddys welded rear in his 83 toy works great. his sx's have pretty even wear

my toyota used to be a DD thats why i didnt weld the rear before, but for a while now i have had 2 other daily drivers so the toy is driven to show off in or wheel now only.

5.71's are junk. They are hard to install correctly, and get a decent gear pattern out of them. The pinion is tiny and from what I saw with mine you only have a maximum of 1 tooth contacting the ring gear at a time.

The gears in my truck were 6 months old when I bought the truck and the rear pinion was completely chewed. Bought a set of new gears for it, spent 2 days getting a good pattern out of them and still wasn't happy with it.

I know lots of sammi guys runing the 5.71s with ok luck, but i've not heard or seen anything good when they are under the heavier toyota trucks.

As far as welded spiders, i've run welded spiders in the rear of nearly all of the rigs that i've had. I like it because it's very consistant, no "unlocking" all of the sudden on the highway, i've seen no weird tire wear from them, matter of fact my only complaints is the tires barking a little bit when I'm pulling into a really tight parking spot on asphault. Other than that, It's cheap and easy traction that works great.

Zuk has a guy running 5.71s with a 4.3/th350 and toy duals with 4.7s in the rear case on 42"s. GloNDark says they are junk though.

before it gets to hostile, i think the desicion is more mind over matter like i stated previously. i know 5.29's are probably much more common, and with dual cases who could really tell the difference anyway, duals are my next upgrade more than likely

i ran 5.71s and 42's for almost 2 years, wheeled it with no problems.  finally blew them up after the back end started hopping and i stepped into in harder.  downsized to 37's for now with 5.29's.  i'm happy.  i wouldn't be afraid of running 5.71s again.  almost wish i had them now.

Here's a local guy (Chris in Mesa, AZ) that had me install a PRECISION 571 back in '05....he started with 37" tires I think....went up to 39"...and less than 2 years ago he upgraded to 42".  I believe 571 gears are 'reserved' for the hardcore off-roaders....the guys that run the BIG tires and balance the driveline stresses the right way.

This is the 05 link      http://gearinstalls.com/flexor1a.htm

here's a shot of Chris's rig on the 42" I think...maybe 39"   http://gearinstalls.com/flexor1c.htm
