37 inch tires?
« on: Mar 17, 2010, 07:45:11 PM »
Since the discontinue of the original Goodyear MTR I am having a hard time finding a 37x 12.5x 15 that I like. Is there a good comparable tire out there that is still street-able so I don't have to buy new wheels?

Thanks everybody. I think I might end up getting a set of 17" bead locks, more tire options.

How are these tires holding up on the street? Have you put any road miles on them? I'm contemplating getting them for my 4runner. How do they work on snow? Don't know if you even get snow where your located?

Well I know they are a very hard compound and Im told they wear like steel on the road.

People run them and love them though from what I heard and they have a nice tread and good enough to support our troops overseas.

Only downside is your limited to rims you can use but ProComp makes a 16.5x8.25 rim with 3.75 back spacing.

an extra two inches of sidewall that has no tread or lugs on it is not going to benefit in the dirt at all!  17's are not hype at all.  With a 17 you will get less of a sloshy or rolling feeling when you are aired down, when you air down you wont loose as much diff clearance, you can fit bigger brakes on your rig and now most companies are going to 17" rim size as a standard for 37" and bigger tires. obviously there are benefits if lots of tires companies dont even make larger tires to fit 15" rims any more.

so an 8.25" wide 16.5" tall wheel will correctly handle a 37x12.5 tire? I just figure you should be closer to 10" wide for that.

I just dont like the fact that companies are doing that, they still need to make 15'' large tires, and there alot of tires out that have lugs extened down the sidewall, and the bigger brakes, and better ride thing, who needs it. thats just me, i think the auto industry has messed up by going to bigger rims, anyhow thats just my opinon

you could use that rim with that tire and it would work fine.  IDK what anyone would consider "correctly" but it kinda comes to personal preference on how wide of rims you want with your tire.  That combo will most likely make the sidewalls look a little more bubbly because the rim is 4" more narrow than the tire.  a 10" rim would probly make the sidewalls look less bubbly. With a more narrow rim you will also have to run a bit lower tire pressure on the highway in order to get the whole contact surface to touch the highway so your tires dont wear goofy.   Im running 17x9's with my 40" MTR's and I really like the setup.  its all personal preference IMO.

Narrow rims can help with keeping the bead seated before you need to upgrade to bead locks too. "Redneck Bead Locks"

I think the rule of thumb though is try and keep the rims no more than 5" narrower than the tire.

the pro comp Xterrain used to be available in 37" for a 15" wheel, idk if it still is.  after i wear out my 35"BFG's im switching to 37" radial rockers.  i dont know what the difference is between a 35 on a 15 and a 37 on a 17...both have 20" of sidewall.  if i had the money though i would probably just go ahead and upgrade to 17s....thats seems to be the way the industry is headed.

blane525 runs 37x12.50x15 Interco TrXus MT and I have to admit they are a better tire than my 37" MTRs.

His TrXus MT's vastly outperform my MTRs in the snow and sand, a bit better on wet or slippery rocks, and they work as well for normal Rock Crawling. The only thing I would say the MTRs are better than the TrXus MT is for medium sized dry & loose rocks, such as the Hammers. I think this is because the MTRs are not as soft as the TrXus MT and handle jagged surfaces better.

The TrXus MT perform much like my old Pitbull ROCKERS in wet and semi-muddy rock climbs, such as up Walker Hill on Rubicon when it's really wet. My MTRs push and don't track as well as the TrXus MT or ROCKERS in this condition.

One thing I really like about the TrXus MT is that although it is a 12.50" wide tire, when you air it down the long and tall sidewall ridges turn the tire into a 15" or 16" wide *usable traction* tire (the MTR lacks badly in low psi sidewall bite).

Needless to say, with the MTR being discontinued, it is a no-brainer for me at this point to replace my MTRs with TrXus MT when the time comes.

Here are some pictures of Bevin's 37x12.50x15 TrXus MT on his 3RZ-powered Dual :turtle: Ultimate 1984 shortbed. Keep in mind he has had these tires now going on 3 years and he lives up in the hills and often drives his truck down to Fresno to work. These tires wear exceptionally well.

Here are his 37" TrXus MTs on 10" wide wheels next to my 37" MTRs on 8" wide wheels

In normal dry rock crawling they are very much comparable to the MTRs

You can see the nice long side ridges have been used

Here is a wet/muddy condition where the TruXs MTs really shine compared to my MTRs

The TruXs MTs eat my MTRs for lunch in the snow. Here is good pic showing how well they self clean

I am pretty sure I will replace my MTRs with these tires someday

I forgot to add that because the TruXs MTs are softer than my MTRs, they ride smoother on the road which is great for my daily driving needs
