New calif smog check
« on: Dec 13, 2009, 07:56:25 PM »
For all Calif diesel owners. As of the first of the year calif wants to impose and new smog check for diesel cars and pickups. This is just another way to rip off the public as there are no current checks for diesel engines. If you have modified your vehicle in any way, new exhaust system, different air filter system or have a chip, you will fail.
They will run your engine static (no load) at 3000rpm then drop off the fuel and quickly bring it back up to 3000 rpm. If any smoke is seen, you fail. Any diesel would more than likely fail at this point. Besides that, 3000 rpm static is really tough on diesel engines, dodge redlines just over that range. This will also cost YOU to do this insane test. Even the smog shops are calling this new check ridicules.
Please sign the petition found at this location: http://www.petitiononline.com/8484/petition.html
Thank you for your help.

Here is a link to a newsletter that discusses this. It is short on specifics, but does give some insight.

http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/ftp/pdfdocs/ARSCNwslttr_Winter2009.pdf

And here is a link to the bill that was passed.

http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/05_Legislative/RegulatoryActions/ab1488.pdf

Hope this helps some of you diesel owners.

Change your engines NOW and buy those vehicles NOW before you're FUBAR with no options.

Stuff like this, unfortunately passes no matter what the public says.  Only big interests and money like the Teamsters Union or similar even makes these cretins budge an inch.  So consider it a done deal, much like anti-gun laws in CA.  The clock is ticking on this one until you're up against a wall with no way out.

I'm a bit confused (I know, it doesn't take much)... The link seems to be for signatures only, with no way to read the petition (or the proposed law) prior to signing. And the link to the bill seems to be for a bill that was passed and signed by the Gov. more than two years ago, and goes into effect 1-1-2010. If so, it's already a done deal. What am I missing here? I'll dig into this a bit more, but right now I don't understand exactly what I'm looking at.
My goal in life is to be as a good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

It's a protest against what's coming in two weeks.  CARB doesn't care if you light its shorts on fire - it'll simply do whatever it wants anyways and that's that.  So it's really a waste of time, unfortunately.

we need to spread the word on this petition, 1071 signatures is not nearly enough to dent CARBs stubborness

I read through some of the bill, and I read in there twice that diesel vehicles with a GVWR over 8500 lbs. are exempt.  Am I reading wrong?  If theat is the case, I checked an F-250 and it has a GVWR of 8800 lbs.  Therefore it, and a F-350 would be exempt.  I am sure that the Chevys and Dodges have comparable specs.  I actually kind of like the irony that his would only affect VW's.

The BAR papers state that all vehicles up to 14000gvwr will be subjected to testing.  I must have missed that in the bill.
