On board air compressors
« on: Nov 08, 2009, 07:58:58 PM »
I am in the middle of my build and one of the next things to consider is air on the trail. I built a rear bumper from 3X6 square tube that I plan to use as a tank and I have found all sorts of gauges and crap but the compressors range from $40-$400 and I just want to see what you guys are running and where you mounted them. I don't plan on using air tools on the trail but I would like to air up or fill a flat. I plan on running 35s.   :dunno:

You can rig up a york. junk yard cost is like 20 bucks. You can run a electric. I have a viair 450c its a 100% duty cycle, 105 off and 150 pressure switch.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

My 450 was like 275, its one of the best you can get for the money. It only pulls 19 amps at full load too.

What size tires do you run, do you have a tank, and how long does it take for you to air up? If I run a York do I have to get rid of my AC or anything?

35s its not super fast but its not super low either. I have 2.5 gal tank. If you make a custom bracket, you can keep your ac. my setup is like 1 cfh, a york is like 6+ cfh

it's a modified starter motor, not a winch motor. I have a friend that tried to make his own with a winch motor, it pulled WAY too many amps.

I had a york on my jeep AND the stock air conditioner compressor, it was AWESOME!

having just the york was plenty... I could fill up my tires and my two friends rigs in less then 15 minutes... probably more like 10... it did not take that long.

I don't know how readily available they are, but I run a Thomas compressor out of a Hummer with CTIS. I got 3 of them for free because they were a recall item for some reason so the dealerships removed them in good working order and replaced them. The issue was a wire that would come loose inside. It flows enough air that I don't run a tank. Fills a 35 in less than 2 minutes. !00% duty cycle. Maybe a guy could find a deal  :dunno:

I have a Chevy 4.3 so it was just natural to modify the AC compressor for OBA.

So far I think the Viair is winning due to budget and that I'm not sure I want to stuff a york under the hood. I know more about the electric compressor so it would be easier for me to set up. I was hoping someone had an idea on the cheap side.

Viairs are pitiful with anything over a 33. A budget co2 setup would be far better.

yep 88 pathy is right  heres my budget co2 setup

the regulator was $35 at poly performance
the fittings were    $5 at harbor freight
the tank i borrowed that will be the main part to find but even if you pay 50 for one you got a $100 powertank

Co2 runs out, viair never will. It maybe a little slow but its got no limits.

I like that idea. I could buy a $40 compressor as a back up with the money saved. I want to look into viair a little more before I start building.

My cheapo mv500 electric pump is my back up, it can be had at pep boys or costco sometimes. I paid like 60$ for mine at 4 wheel parts.  It is faster than the viair pumps but will overheat if I do more than 4 37s. My c02 setup will do 4 trips airing up from 8-30 in lees than 1 minute per tire. Then I have to help my buddies out because they are still on the first tire. I would love to have a OBA setup but york or oasis is the only way I would ever switch. Everything else is just too slow.

Is that a scuba tank? Where do you take it to get it filled? What does it cost to fill it?

Its a co2, even a 3000psi air tank cant come close to the volume it can hold. But once its empty, you have to exchange it at a welding supply store.

Hey I never said it was fast but its far from junk.
It works every time.
I can run air tools.
It never runs out.
It doesnt cost any money after buying it.

how rinky is your compressor though?
the only one i used seem to take forever to take a 33 from 15 to 30 psi
i ended up just driving on 15 psi to the gas station

i know there are bad a ss 100% duty cycle viairs but they arent cheap

i throught this together for under $50 bucks

Ya I got mine for 275 I think. But think about it. How many fills will it take with the co2 before you hit 300$? What if its got a leak, you leave it on and it empties?

well considring i get to go wheeling maybe twice a year
and 20 pounds is $20 from marlin that would be fifteen fills for $300
now lets say i blow a whole tank every trip
i think that would put the year around 2017 once im finally $300 dollars in

im not sayin its junk but if you got the money go for it, if you want the same results for  a fraction of the cost do it my way
