Dr Phats 1984 Toyota Build
« on: Oct 25, 2009, 07:56:34 PM »
Hey guys, will use this as an introduction thread I guess too!

Names Adam (Dr Phat) from Long Island, NY but currently go to the school at Mass Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, MA.

Im new to the Toyota scene, but not 4 wheeling, truck, or Nissan scene.

My other rides include a modded 2003 Nissan Frontier and a 1953 Ford F-100 w/ 429 big block.  :hahaha:

But, as far as Toyotas go, I just picked this up past weekend and cant wait to dive down and get my hands dirty.

It already has a 3-4" lift I would say in it as it clears 33's no problem. The kicker is though it only has 26k miles on it and has been in a cargo container in Florida since 1985 and has been under a tarp on Long Island for one year.

Plans are in no particular order are:

Flat bed from All-Pro
Lockers
Gears
Rear end swap
Real Suspension lift (blocks in the rear and small single AAL up front) 5-6"
Hy-steer
35-37" Tires
Nissan Emblems

Please comments, criticism and questions!

Also, what are options as far as carbs go cause Im new the carburated + off road world. Do the stock carbs hold their own off road? My buddy I bought it off of was telling me about the Weber conversion which bypassed alot of the vacuum lines and what not.

Again, comments, concerns, CRITICISM, questions, please feel free to ask.

your stock carb will do better than a weber offroad, if it aint broke, dont fix it.
whats up with putting nissan symbols on it?

get crossover high steer if u want 35-37" tires, the stock pushpull steering will fail, j arm will break eventually.  and the stock torque rod will rip off the frame.

D'oh, should have took the Nissan emblem idea off it. Haha, just copy and pasted my posts from the Nissan forums. I might be getting a Nissan hard body cab for it if fixing the a pillars becomes to much of a PITA (the truck was rolled in 1985 which is why it was put in storage, then the guy started to fix it a couple years ago, got as far as cutting the a and b pillar and bending them back into shape). And swap in a spare Nissan axle (H233b) I have laying around pending I can get the right gearing for it.

How will the stock steering handle the 33x10.50 TSL's on it now?

Hy-steer will most likely be my first mod after I get it running.

I ran 33's for about 60k with no issues. But if you can afford to do it right then why not. I had a 32/36 webber on my 83 and LOVED it. never had an issue and getting rid of all those vacume lines was a god send. But like he said if you run 35s hi steer is a must. Build your own flat bedif your handy with a welder. you can save money to put toward hi steer. plus there is only about 1,000,000 threads on here of different styles of flat beds. take your time and do ALOT of research and find out what you want first. just my oppinion. welcome to marlin you will find a good group of people here and most of them know what they are taliking about. my ol toyota on 33s

Im some what handy with a welder but dont have the time to bend up and cut the steel, thats why I like the All-pro kit aside from looks and massive amount of clearance.

New plans after doing some research might include a conversion to run off propane which would solve pretty much any carb's problem.

pane sounds like a good plan, carbs suck, all my yotas are and have been fuel injected.
my f-toy might get pane.

Propane sounds like it might be legal for DD up here in NY.

Taken from NYS DMV website.

What motor vehicles are exempt from emissions inspection for gas-powered vehicles?

These motor vehicles are exempt from emissions inspection for gas-powered vehicles:

    * Vehicles that are less than two model years old, or more than 25 model years old.

I realize it says gas but it goes on to talk about diesels.

Small update to the thread. I was able to come home to work on it for some time. Got a chance to hook up a battery, see if the electrics were ok. Turned the key and the truck came to life (electronically at least). Changed the oil and new oil filter along with new plugs. Started taking apart the carb but by the time I disconnected my 1000th vacuum line I said to myself this isnt worth the trouble if propane power is coming shortly.

After that I got some one to buy the bed from me. Threw in the trailer hitch all for $450 bucks! (Bought the truck for 1,000)

Here is how she stands now...with the Nissan in the background.

I wouldn't bother running an h233b. Sure, they're beefy little axles but regearing to 5.14 is an easy $500 and the only option for a locker is an ARB (or a lockright if the 233 you're running is the older 31-spline).

Stick with the Toyota rear end. Trust me, I just got out of my money-pit of a Nissan Frontier.

Yeah I dont think Im going to run the h233b. Plus the axle is like 63" wide IIRC.

I still may try and run an old Nissan Hardbody cab though.  (My cab as been chopped at the A and B pillars becasue it was rolled so it may be easier to switch cabs.

Now I just need to find some 36-39" tires and ditch the 33x10.50 TSL's!

Im thinking IROK's.

Yup thats my new Miller 180 I just picked up. Hehe.

Ill have plenty of pics to show off the welds. I was practicing the other night on some .120" pipe I had around and for me being a noob, the welds looked pretty damn nice.

I should be picking up an 88' cab tomorrow. I tried working on the current cab I have no and its just too FUBAR'd

Now I just need to get a title for this damn thing...GAH!

Well 5.5" springs and 1-1.5" shackles. Should flatten out a little bit too.

Im looking into running 37-39. Im looking at 37" IROKs and 38" TSL SX right now.

you must me wanting to not trim any body panels then?  I ran 37's on my 84 xtra cab with only lifted shackles.  And my current 87 4runner now has 40's on it with only 2-3 inches lift.
