Rokyoat's mild DC Tacoma build-up
« on: Jan 28, 2009, 03:31:37 PM »
I have had this truck for about a year now and it's long over-do to get cut up!

Truck specs:
2000 ex-cab tacoma TRD, V6 and 5 speed
Motor is stock with a K&N intake and flowmaster exhaust.
I traded for this truck for my built 89 and when I got it already had a 6"fabtech IFS lift  :stopit: It was way stiff and rode like  :pokinit:.

I have been collecting parts for the build, since I WON a ballistic 4 link kit on pirate, a year ago. ( I will be using the kit on the front tho.)  I have most everything I need to get it wheel-able for the snow.

The Plans:
-3 link front with HP 44 axle and 16" FOA coil-overs 250/350 coil rates fo now
-high steer with hydro assist
-9" rear end with 63" chevys. Frenched hangers
-rear disks with 1/2 ton chevy parts
-bobbed bed
-37 MTRs on 15x8 steelies 5-lug
-York OBA
-new front winch bumper and rear swing-out tire carrier
-open diffs and 4.10s for now...
-Ride height in the 24-25" range. Rear is at 24 now...
I am going to get the axle swap and suspension done for now. then do 5.38 gears with ARBs front and rear, this summer. Dual cases will get done then also. I have been working on it for a couple weeks now.

Here is how it looked when I started...

So far I have got the rear 9" hung under there with frenched hangers from Ruffstuff, axle has ruffstuff truss, perches, and flip kit. TG fill plug. The disk swap was done using 88 Chevy S-10 calipers and 80's CJ-7 rotors. Bed was cut down 8" also. It was too long when it was stock but I didnt want it to be super stubby, the tailgate is right at the shackles. more pics...

When I got the truck the prev. owner told me the motor mounts on the frame had broke but were "welded up." When I was cutting the IFS out I got a better look at the motor mounts and they weren't pretty to say the least. :puke: The drivers side had cracked and welded on one side where the bolt was missing :shake: and the pass side was all COBBED up! I ended up builting my own out of 1 3/4 .120 tube.

For sure! I'm sooo ready to fully get it in the snow. there will be more snow soon... I hope. My deadline is feb 27. I want to be done by my birthday. Plus the jew and I are going on a run march 13th. I would like to test it before that little event.  All the Ballistic crossover steering stuff and hydro assist should be here tomorrow.

I made some progress today. Got the rear brakelines plumbed, I used 12" stainless steel lines at the calipers atteached to the hardlines.  Also welded some gussets to the caliper brackets, they were really necessary but they look good with new blingin brake lines. I put my steering shaft together too, I had to use taco stuff with 2nd gen stuff. switching those little u-joints and yokes are a PITA! With some help from the JEW we got the new ball joints "pressed" into the knuckles.

The brown guy delivered my crossover steering set-up from Ballistic this afternoon. Also got the new gasket kit for the steering box. Should be able to get that all put back together tomorrow. Tomorrow I should get my hydro assist kit, some brackets from Ruffstuff and a new 3" spanner wrench so i build the ballistic flex joints.

yeah a camping trip would be cool, if there is still snow. the way it's going it will just be mud.

I have got all the front links mocked up and will be tacking it all in there today and testing the travel. hoping to have it sitting on all 4 tires by sunday  8)

still have quite a bit more  :pokinit: to do. still have all the 1 ton brake stuff, york OBA is only half done now, rear shocks and new crossmember and drivelines...

so the 22nd might be pushing it... im tryin tho

Thanks. Yeah I liked my 1st gen too and my 2nd gen and also my 3rd gen... I've had them all, and a 98 4 runner thrown in there. But all the trucks I've had had 22Rs in them (great motor) but I really like the power of the 3.4. And the A/C

I got alitte more done today. I was working on the front links today. Got the Panhard brackets tacked into place, and the upper link tacked in also.  I ended up putting a couple slight bends in the upper link to clear the frame and help make room around the exhaust. I thought my bender was going to blow up bending .250 DOM! I also cut the stock tranny crossmember out and put my new one in... :talkingn:
The front is being built at 3/4 bump by the way
Here are the pics. I'll get some better pics tomorrow when its lighter out...

I got some more done this weekend. I got the shock hoops built, I still need to add a bar across the engine between the hoops. I also welded most of the link brackets up, i still need to weld some more but it was getting windy, so I quit and started hitting the capt. instead. :eyebrow:  I bolted the coil-overs up and they sit about 1.5" too tall in the front, so I am going to switch out the top spring and get 2" shorter springs but keep the same 250 spring rate. after the shocks are charged it should be just about level.
here are some pics, sorry some are blurry I dont know whats up with my camera.
