http://www.gentryoffroad.com
This is 4 years pictures that I programmed into a web site.
It doesn’t have a lot of hard trails yet, but it is a start.
Thought some of you might find it helpful.

Currently I have 36 different trails on the site. I was wondering if you guys would like it better if it included all of the major trails in California?
The reason I ask is because I spend lots of time researching trails. I find reviews on some trails in the forum, some on other sites, and some I never find even after a hour of searching.
I do not know of any web site that has a review for that many trails and is free. If there is a site like that please let me know, because I don’t want to reinvent the wheel.

There are a couple sites like yours but nowhere near as extensive as the ones you've done. Most of the ones I've encountered are bb style and are not very informative.

What I was considering doing was changing the top menu on the site so that it was
Home - Trail Reviews - My Trips - 4X4 Information - …………………..
I would put the trails I have documented in Trail Reviews and also My Trips (so my family can view them easily)

I would ask people for trail info and pictures, then add those reports to Trail Reviews. This would help me by getting the trail information that I can never find. It would also make a large collection of trails so that in the future other people wouldn’t have the same problem searching for trails.

I am NOT willing to steal information from the forum or from other sites in order to make gentryoffroad bigger, I feel that is wrong.
However if you guys have pictures and information I would be happy to add them to the list.

The required information would be:
Your user name (so people get credit for taking the pictures and spending their time)
At least one picture of the trail
Picture size to be around 600 X 400 of larger
The year you ran the trail
The difficulty (Easy, Moderate, Difficult) would need to add Hard for those trials that eat sheet metal.
A description of the trail
The general location (gps cords would be nice but not necessary I can get those)
Is there fishing?
Is there camping?

I would also need help from others to keep the reports accurate. Basically by having others report trail information that is not correct.

And of course  the site would always remain free with no banners and other bs.

So what do you think? I Dunno...

I like the site very much because it hard to find info on trails other than word of mouth or searching for a long time through forums

I will definantly send some pictures and info your way If I hit a trail you do not have listed

If you still have trials from NJ and would like to see them posted I would be more than happy to do so. I even take easy trails because most of us seem to start out on those good dirt roads with stock trucks.  Gap

I think this is a great service you are providing, I've done some of the same things on our bb. Not as in depth as you but if you check our directions to runs thread you will get there. Thumbs Up

The thing I like about ours is that it is in a bb format so any member can actually create and post it themselves. Plus updates and corrections can be added at will by anyone. I've thought about doing individual trail directions like yours but just haven't had the time. You've got me thinking about it though.

I thought about using php to let people register then add and edit their own trails.
I decided that if I did that it would cause problems.

1) It would not give control of disk space on the server, this could lead to over flow. This would lead to having people using photo type websites to host the pictures like how marlin's BB does. Then you end up with missing pictures, and the user has to sort threw garbage to find the trail they are looking for. This would defeat the whole reason why the site is being built.
2) This would not offer any control of accurate information, and I could not think of a good screening process.
3) It could lead to vandalism, spam, and other junk.
4) It would lead me to have to constantly baby sit the web site which I do not have time for.
5) Once the site was corrupted I would not have any interest in it, because it would be a pain to fix all the time.
I would have spent a lot of time and everyone would have a mess.  I\'m Down

So instead I wrote a program in php to auto post the pictures which saves a lot of time.
Currently I ask people for their information and pictures. Then I make their page(s), if their page needs corrections or updates all they need to do is email me.
This gives me control of what goes on the site and will hopefully lead to lots of accurate information without all the junk.Unfortunately the process takes longer but as the site grows I think it will be worth it.

I have gone through the forum at marlincrawler and at yotatech and have about 250 trails that are worth asking permission for. It took about 24 hours sorted these forums, Only about 1/4 of the posts where worth looking at because of missing pictures/information. Out of the 250 that I have only a few could be used with out gathering more information from the author. So far everyone has been great about providing information, and I would like to thank everyone again.  Thumbs Up

True, you'd get some clowns messing with it and it could get out of control and is why MC enlists a small army of mods to keep a watchful eye.
