Why is that?

I think the 2tr's will be cheap and plentiful soon, since they are in both 2wd and 4wd's.
Starting on a 1gr soon will post some pics when i get a chance.

Thought I would give you all an update now that I have a few trips on this swap.
Mike hit it on the nose the torque curve on this engine is impressive. Not as much low end grunt as a 3.4,but a huge improvement over 2/3rz.
Link to some random build picshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/38066808@N06/

Also I found this on craigslist,if you are local to PNW sounds like a great deal.

Justin, is the 2TR drive-by-wire?

I spoke to my friend who I've learned most of my engine theory from (sirdeuce, but he is never online), and he explained the VVT-i to me.

What the VVT-i does is it adjusts the timing for a better power band that works with your particular driving style. He said that if you lug the engine then it will adjust for better bottom end power, and that if you get the RPMs up and rev it out, then it adjusts for better top end power.

So I said, "Well if it improves the bottom end power and the top end power, then hasn't it widened the power band?" and he told me that it doesn't "widen" the power band but rather it "moves" the power band.

So if the initial peak torque is @ 1800 rpm at like 6° retarded for instance, then when you get to 3000 rpm then the cam timing will be adjusted so that the torque is peaked once again.

He said it makes it seem as if the power band has become wider but technically it is only moving the power band around to suit the driver's power requirements. The VVT-i manipulates the rpm range where the power is being created.

I said, "Well then on a dyno it will appear wider, yes?" And he said this is true, but in reality the power band is not wider, it is just following the power requirement through out the rpm range. He said to think of it as EFI on crack. Camshaft timing, ignition timing, fuel mixture and air mixture all changing many many times per second trying to optimize the power delivery, hunting to find the optimum operating parameters for the engine at any given rpm.

So I assume it must be a drive by wire so that the computer can alter the air delivery. Even through you have the pedal to the floor, the throttle plate is not necessarily at WOT.

In other words..... I WANT VVT-i!!! Bow Down Yup yup

Ya Mike all the 2tr's are drive-by-wire.

Thats my understanding that the vvt-i system continuously adjusts cam timing for optimum power or efficiency. Depending on rpm throttle position and load.

I still dont know if I could do another engine swap for 9hp and 3ft/lbs. I'd have to see the dyno sheet on one first. Maybe if the torque was down low. But from the test I've done the 3RZ has dare flat torque band to begin with.

I will not be changing my 3RZ, but when I build my next right, I will consider the 2TR depending on how heavy it is.

I still dont know if I could do another engine swap for 9hp and 3ft/lbs.

Stop thinking about it in terms of only 9 hp and 3 tq! Those are only peak numbers! I bet at other ranges in the power band the 2TR is +20 hp and +20 tq if not more!

Mike, you've seen my dyno sheets, that not possible. The torque barley moves 20 ft/lbs from idol to peak.

The Jury is still out, I've been testing products and will let you know when I find the magic combo. Right now, go long tube headers. At the moment there are only two companies offering long tube headers, neither one of which will fit a 3RZ swap. So Im working with Doug Thorley to offer a special version of a long tube Tri-Y the will hopfully produce torque and hp. With torque being the primary purpose.

This is what I am talking about. This is just an illustration for reference to my point. Just because the peak is "only 3 more ft-lbs" really doesn't mean a whole lot when you consider the increase in power throughout the rpm range thanks to the VVT-i.

Yes I know but the guy that ran the dyno got on the throttle late. I keep asking him to get it around 1500RPM's but each time he was late.
