TacoBox vs Lefty??
« on: Dec 09, 2007, 05:16:37 PM »
Im having a tough time deciding between the two.. Swap out stock for the 5:1 inchworm lefty or go dual cases with a 2.28:1 tacobox? same price basically.. Tacobox will be slightly lower geared. My biggest concern will be the strenght of the stock case if I go with the tacobox. any input would be great.. Its going in a 97 tacoma 5spd 2.7L. 5.38 gears SAS'd on 38's.

Thanks ahead of time..    :headscratch:

Just had the assumption chain drivin would be a little weaker than gear driven.. Also that the input shafts are more prone to breaking on the stock case.

I wouldn't get a left. I know of 3 that have been broken (1 in front of me@Moab) and they use fail gear parts inside it.

You can't go wrong with Marlins, service, strength, or commitment to improving upon his products.  I've got the 2.28 in front of my T-case and it's all behind the 4.0.  No problems at all and with my 5.38's and 5 speed auto trans I'm at 111: 1 crawl ratio.

I couldn't ask for a better product to upgrade a truck with.

you probably already know that inchworm makes a crawler box setup also. I have been trying to deside between the two, I like having more clocking options that inchworm offers on their adapter. Inchworm's are on sale now too.

 Ok call me crazy but you could just order the "Lefty" adapter plate and then use the rest of the parts from Marlin :turtle: They do sell just the plate and it would seam to be a good choice. IMHO Marlin and Jim both make great products but I am not one to judge for any one but my self. I think that if you put 2 and 2 together you still get an impressive 4x4.

There is another thread on another board where some people were having problems with leaky inchworm adapters.  My Marlin Crawler doesn't leak and thats a big selling point to me.  Why those people are having leak issues I don't know but that would put a big question in my mind.

I love my Marlin Crawler Box!

I know that's an old post, but I want to clarify that the TacoBox has faaaaaar more clocking options than Inchworm: The TacoBox can be clocked 360-degrees in 5-degree increments.

here's the thread, apparently it just happened a few days ago.....

The fix has something to do with adding cromoly shafts, but I'm not too sure since I'm hearing this second hand...

Really who cairs if it has more clocking options? Most of them are useless positions anyhow. anything more then 30* is all but pointless.

Not to menchion hes looking for a 4CYL DUAL SETUP! I know MCI has been OUT OF STOCK for over NINE FULL MONTHS!

If I were him Id go with a Dual setup to have more options on the trial. Id head over to Inchworm and buy the adapters. and If he really wanted to drop some extra coin then buy Marlins 4.7 gears.

I really feel Inchworm makes a better tranny/crawlbox adapter. For the rear adapter its a wash more or less.

But Jim usually always answers his own phone, and he has the parts instock.

The advantage I see with the lefty adapter is that you could have the option of running 4.7s in the rear case with a driver side drop, where the Marlin taco box only lets you have them in the crawler case.  From an engineering standpoint, you'd really prefer to have the gear reduction further downstream in the drive train.  The situation I'm nervous about with the Marlin setup, is if you put 4.7s in the front case, and you run the crawler in low and your t-case in high, you're putting a huge torque load on the input of your stock t-case.  I'll either have to live with 2.28s in the front, or use the lefty adapter in the rear gear driven case with the 4.7s.  If they ever get that 4cyl coupler back into production that is.

On the other hand, I'm learning cnc programming at work, so maybe I won't have to wait... :flamer:
probably just wishful thinking though :screwy:

Now that I think about it, guys that run 3 cases have the ability to load that rear case in a similar fashion.  I haven't heard of input shaft failures from Marlin or BigMike, but I supose they probably wouldn't advertise.

Anyone have a tacobox with 4.7s in the *front* case?  How's your rear case holding up while in low in the front, and high in the rear?

I was toying with the idea of putting triple case's in mine until Marlin spent the weekend at y house and he told me to just put 4.7's in my front case.  I told him about the concerns of loading the rear case and he said don't so I won't.  There is a Taco with 4.7's in the front case and he has never had any trouble with his and his is an inchworm set up.

I'm getting ready to take my case out of the truck here shortly to send to Marlin to put the 4.7's in it and I have the 4.0 liter in my truck and will be running a 4.7 in it in the near future.  I don't think you will have any problems.
