v6 third in a 4cyl housing
« on: Nov 12, 2007, 11:22:51 PM »
I've seen a couple of posts on this, but I couldn't find the definitive answer to help me spend the money.  I want know if I get the assembled v6 diff with the ARB and 5.29 gears, if it will fit in my 4cyl housing, or if I'll need to do any modifcation.  Is there any benefit to getting the v6 diff anyway?  Thanks in advance!

Bolt in, you will have to widen and deepen the gear slots on the housing.

Are the slots needed due to the 5:29's? Do the axle splines match?

Sometimes you can feed the ring gear through by turning the pinon as you insert the 3rd. It depends on the actual ring size and 5.29's will be tight depending on the manufacturer. Most of the time it is easier just to cut the notch out a little more just don't get too crazy though or you could end up with a leak.

:dunno: my V6 4.88 3rd fell in nicely.

the bearings are larger in the V6, and the case has more ribs that are thicker.  The case will not deflect as much as a 4cyl version.
