Too Much Vibration!
« on: Sep 06, 2005, 01:37:45 AM »
I bought my '81 4x4 shortbed after it sat for 8 years.....After all the money and hard work i have invested in it, the worst thought that comes to mind is selling it...But the unpleasant ride is driving me nuts!

Its horrible...I have rock hard N.W.O.R. front lift springs, 4" blocks in back, 33's, no torque rod and no shocks front or rear. Wow, am i insane? So, i have a few questions...

1. I had to flip the u-bolts to install the blocks....So, Where can i mount the shocks(when i get them)?

2. After i installed the blocks(angled), take offs and cruising feel like im driving on tires with really aggressive tread.....??

3. Also, after block install....Downshifting is followed by major studdering/vibration, even when downshifting from 2000rpm rolls. (could be linked to #2)?

4. Oh, and what exactly does the torque rod do while onroad driving? Do they sell extensions?

I have more questions about modifying the front leaft pack, but these questions take priority...Thanks.

your vibration is most likely because of axle wrap changing your driveshaft angles. With 4' blocks axle wrap will be uncontrollable without some traction bars, especiallly if your using stock springs.
The torque rod is to prevent brake steer,if you did cross over steering it wouldn't be a problem, but with a stock setup when you apply the brakes real hard the axle will wrap causing it to steer to one side

Yup, I would bet that your driveline angle has changed.

I am betting this is a short bed truck? You would do much better if you had a CV-Joint on your rear driveline.

Even with my CV Jointed rear driveline right now, without my axle being rotated, it vibrates HORRIBLY! Try to get your pinion angle pointed about an inch below your rear tcase output shaft. This will be the correct pinion angle, and if you've already got that and its still vibrating, then I would recommend using a CV Joint on your rear shaft mounted up at the t/case.

Well, they were angled blocks, so i guess they compensated for the driveline angle change (visibly it looks alright). So, how do i go about putting a CV jount in? Totally new driveshaft, or can i get a CV joint from something and bolt it in?

And ya, its a shortbed, with stock springs in the back.

Thanks

pull a leaf from the front and find some chevy s10 2wd springs and put 2 of them in your rear pack and throw the blocks away,  or even better use them for boat anchors

use a rear shock for a torque rod up front, or do like me and have a mount made under the radiator crossmember and lengthen the stock rod

you can fit 33's under a 1st gen with little if any lift,  with a little firewall clearancing

4 inches you can fit 35's easy
