22RE Rebuild
« on: Jan 07, 2016, 10:15:33 AM »
I have finally pulled the trigger on deciding to get a rebuilt 22RE engine for my 1989 Toyota 4X4 pickup. I decided to go with 22RE performance, it seems like they take the time and have the knowhow to make things right. They are about six months out so this will be a slow process. This truck is no longer my daily driver so I have the time.

Does anyone have a 22RE that was rebuilt by 22RE performance? I am looking forward to having a new engine that does not leak oil ;)

when I blew my motor in my 4runner, 22re was without a doubt my first choice, but I couldn't wait(its my daily driver). this place is great, worth the wait,if you can  :twocents:

Why not just build it yourself? If you've never done it, look at it as learning experience if you have done it before just remember practice makes perfect.

If I'd ever let anyone build me a 22RE, it would ONLY be 22RE Performance. No one else meets my standards. I made a mistake of someone else before for time's sake and have regretted it ever since.  Worth the wait!

Good to know that you guys agree that 22RE Performance builds a high quality engine. I would like to rebuild it myself, it would be much less expensive, but not sure if I have the time. I would still have to outsource some of the work to a machine shop. I also do not have the tools at my disposal.

I remember 85crawler saying he built one from 22re performance parts and machining, he said it was way cheaper. It also helps to live in the same area :D
Putney does top quality work and has awesome customer service.
I hear he is starting to build stroker motors :shhh:

Yep knucklebuster is right , I built my 22re with parts from 22re performance, I couldn't afford to have jim build me one so I opted to get all the parts , have him do all the machine work , which included a ported head and bored over block and I just assembled it all myself ,I will say this is the most solid running 22re I've done , built a few for buddies using other rebuild Kits and they work but I wanted the best and Jim is a good guy and wanted my $ to stay local , I do a lot of business with him so he hooked me up on parts as well , my 85 runner has been through 2 other 22res and I plan for this one to stay in there for a long time , I got maybe 50k or more on it now and it still runs just as strong as when I put it  together, deffently has more power then other 22res I've had and with 37s and now 35s my runner is quick for a crawler

You made the right choice man , sucks you gotta wait that long but it'll be worth it , just make sure you break it in right , get your injectors sent out for a rebuild if you arnt getting new ones too

Where would you recommend the injectors be rebuilt at. I think 22RE performance does this too. 1985CRAWLER that's awesome that you have had good results with 22RE performance parts. I would like to get this project done sooner, but hey at least I have some time to figure out how to pay for it ;).

Also I opted to use a block that 22RE Performance had on hand rather than taking my engine apart and having it sit exposed for 6 months. Do you guys think that it makes a difference if I use the one that is currently in my truck, or the one 22RE Performance has on hand?

A 22r block is just that a 22r block(84-95). If they have one they checked out and said is good id rock with that one.

Might be just me (but I know other people that think like this)......

If at all possible, I like to keep the original parts (block, etc) that came with the truck, with the truck.......
