Transmission rattling and 1st 2nd and 3rd not for the rattles and 5th what do I need a new transmission and how do I tell what transmission it is

Sounds like you have a bad bearing in it. You will need a rebuilt transmission. Use the transmission identification chart to figure out what you have.

If your truck is fairly stock and the transmission haven't been changed you will either have an L-52 or a G-52. You want the G-52. It will have a removable bellhousing.

What other year model will fit my 83 I I would rather just put in a new transmission or a used transmission

The L52 was only used in 83. The G52 was used from 83-85 behind carbureted engines. If you have the G52 it is pretty straight forward to upgrade to to the stronger and more common W56.
