So, turns out on Friday night I broke one of my chromoly CV's.... I run TG 27 spline Chromos with stock axles and hubs. I think it happened when driving up a steep rocky climb, turning slightly left, at 12000rpm. I heard a small crack but nothing like a CV or axle breaking noise.

The cage that holds the balls actually let go. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Had me wondering whether that is made out of chromoly or not...

I'm not a fan of fail gear, I'm running rcv front axles, I would highly recommend these over what your currently breaking :yupyup:

Trail gears are only good to 10000 RPM.  :smokin:

LOL.... Don't the 22RE's and 3RZ's rev that high? Haha.

Obviously I mean't 1200rpm. Just got carried away with zeros....

Anyway, my latest theory is that the cage must be different between 27 vs 30 so tonight I will compare stock cage vs 27 cage vs 30 cage.

Cheers mate. Yeah they're pretty popular here. I have a complete 2.4 2L with a cracked block if you pay postage 😜

I took some photos tonight to send off to TG for my warranty claim. I thought I'd put a few up here for those that are interested.

I also checked out whether I could use a cage from a stock CV and the answer is no. They are different. A stock CV cage is larger in diameter and will not fit inside the Chromo 27.

To be honest you should really just consider upgrading to a better product. Unless you like periodically having to go through this...Sometimes time is worth more than money.

I would agree. May as well warranty them and sell them to get some RCVs.

There is definitely a compelling argument to move up to 30 splines!

 However, what makes the cage any stronger in a 30 spline over a 27?

Og bobby longs are tough as nails, I can vouch for them in 2 of my trucks. I killed 2 long side factory birfs one cage fail similar to York othet busted the bell, both during turning and that tire on an obstacle. I've put the longs through some decent abuse and they don't complain.

Someone will correct this if I'm mistaken but I believe the cage is chromo as well that would make her tougher.

most likely manufacturing process, rcv axles come with " no questions asked" lifetime warranty, and are made in the USA, trail gear probably comes with a 1 year warranty, I'm sure the parts are being made in china, and the quality of raw material is worse

It seems strange that it only lasted 3 trips.... And there wersen't even that tough! Haha. I have mates who also run the same TG 27 spline chromoly CVs with stock axles with no breakages. Vehicles are as follows;

- FJ40 shorty, turbo 1HZ, 37" treps, Air Locker.
- 1985 extra cab HiLux, 1KZTE, 37" treps, Pro Locker.
- 1990 dual cab, 2.8 turbo diesel, 35" Silverstone Extremes, weldie.
- 2000 HiLux dual cab, 3rz, SAS, 35" Silverstones, Air Locker.
- 1990 dual cab, 2.8 diesel, 35" Silverstone Extremes, weldie, mad man behind the wheel.
- Suzuki Sierra pickup, swift GTi, Lux diffs, 33" Silverstones, Air Locker.

Only one of them has broken a chromo and it was the mad bloke haha. Funnily enough he also broke the cage... Makes no sense though that the two least powerful vehicles have broken cages. More research is required...

Decided to put an open centre back in the Lux for the time being, or at least until my warranted 27 arrives. I had this spare factory 4.88 center on hand anyway. It should take some pressure off the front end while I have a stock CV in the drivers side.

Today I learned that Aussies refer to diffs as a "centre"  :D

USA vs AUS
Birfield = CV
3rd member = diff centre
Pickup = HiLux
Flat bed = flat tray

There are probably many more haha.

Maybe not in some thick mud, but they sure look like they can do the job where boggers cant, in the rocks.

 :ha_ha: takes more than a tire swap to make that thing look completely incognito. Still looks like a super capable rig to me  :chew:

Up to you but I've never seen a 30spl cage let go. Only the shaft shear or the bell of the CV opens up.
