this is my first post ever. I live in northern Ut. and own a 93 toy ex-cab and just put 33s on it and it has ARB lift but rubs. i would like to do a SAS but out of budget for now any suggestions on how to get 33s to fit better? i do not mind trimming sheet metal but do not know where to start.

Is the ARB klift the Old Man Emu kit, torsion bars and leaf springs?
From ARB's PDF

If it were me, I would start with modifying the pinch weld body seam along the firewall(beat it flat or cut it off), then beat back the lower corner to the body mount.  Might need a little cutting of the lower fender.

If that doesn't clear the tires, you can go with a 2" body lift.  This will require modifying the cut-out in the floor for the shifters(if you have a 5-spd), lowering the radiator, lifting the front bumper, etc.

Or, for a little more money, 1.5" ball joint spacers and 3" longer shackles(yields 1.5" lift).  This lift will require a small modification to the upper A-arm, new ball-joints, and an alignment.

With a combo of the 3, I am able to clear 35x12.50's on 15x10's w/2.5" backspaced rims.  For 33's it usually takes two of the mods.

Other options,
Crank up the torsion bars and 3" longer shackles.  Will need an alignment afterwards.
Different backspaced rims.

4Crawler Off-road has the body lift and ball joint spacers, both are quality products at decent prices.

Thank you for the info and the picture. I do have the old man emu torsion bars and med rear springs.
I think I will probably go with cutting it off as i want to put 35s on later. I was thinking of using a hand held band saw the make the cuts and trim a piece of sheet metal to fit the hole. I was wondering if there is a thread already out there about this kind of project?

Here is Tubbing write-up on a 2nd gen.

If you do an SAS, and only run 35', you wont need to tubb them for clearance, the standard swap brackets and springs give you more than enough lift for 35's.

Thank you for the link. Any recommendations on SAS kits, I wanted to keep the truck as low as possible but still fit 35s with the option to fit 37s at a later date.
In Utah the lift laws only allow me to lift the truck 26 in. max measured from the bottom of the frame rail under the drivers side to the ground.

Rears up front (RUF) and Chevy 63's out back will be your best option price and functionally. Easily run 33-37's while remaining low with some trimming

Allpro used to have a kit, Trialgear :puke: has one, I think skymanufacturing has 4 kits available.  Given your concern over height of the frame to comply with Utah state law, you might consider building a 2wd instead of your 4x4.  The 2wd frame is designed differently, and allows for a lower lift when done.  A buddy built this '92, and with 37's it had nearly the same entry height as my '90 IFS on 33's.

The lift used was rear Toyota springs upfront(moves axle 2" forward), and a set of chevy springs with 2" block in the rear.  The 37's rubbed a bit, but it was a very stable rig on the trail, and easy to climb in and out of on the trail as well, and no issues with frame-to-trail obstacle clearance.

Same tire and rims on the 3rd gen Runner he built after the '92, the white rig next to it was another 2wd conversion on 37's if I remember correctly.

What the front axle moved forward 2" looks like.

If I were in your shoes, I would build the '93 to a point to make it as capable as the IFS can be, then once you are sure you want/need the SAS, look at buying a built rig, or build up a 2wd to run the type of trails you find yourself running the most, and tailor it to fit your needs.

Just an FYI the 84 and 85s have the same type of frame as the 2WD frames. The sought after one you speak of.

Thank you for the info and the pics. Moving the axle forward was one of my goals, are there any down sides to having rear springs in the front?       I am replacing the front steering components plus the upper and lower ball joints this weekend and will try and post a pic of the truck after I am done.

Not usually, though depending on how worn they are, you may need to rebuild or add an additional leaf to them.

True, but given the price that those two years command in most markets, it is cheaper/easier to find/buy and convert a 2wd.  In my area a running '84 or '85 usually runs north of $4k in stock/slightly modified form, while 2wd's of the same years can often be found running for under $1500.

If the pre-early '80's Japanese imports values continue to climb, I wouldn't be surprised to see stock '84 and '85 4x4's rise to the same levels as the 1994-98 Supras, they will likely be just as rare given how many have been built/beat up as trail rigs.

You might consider rebuilding the calipers, rebuild kits run about $12, and it is relatively easy to do.

Easiest way to post pics, is use a host site like photobucket.com, then post the link in your post.  You will get a list like this to chose what type of link you want to use.

General question I do not have a skid plate on the front of my truck and was thinking about buying a bud built t-case cross member, but  I only have enough money for one. Which one do I buy first the front skid plate or t-case crossmember? Any opinions, the truck is ifs.
