The Boy's & the 22r Build
« on: Sep 02, 2015, 01:35:18 PM »
My 20r in the faithful 1980 pickup is leaking more oil than it burns gas.  We use it daily for water hauling, fire wood, tractor duty, feeding etc so we can't really afford any down time.  I need a plug and play long block!

I have this free '84 22r that was supposedly hydro-locked.  The boys are starting up their home school curriculum after labor day.  I thought I would put them on some applied math and hands on mechanical confidence with engine building.  We have learning to use reference materials, precise measuring to the thousandths of an inch, differences in decimals, area of a cylinder, compression ratio calculations, valve train math.   All kinds of things they have to learn anyway but I can show them why instead of just keeping it on paper in a book.  Best part is when they are done it roars to life and does smokey burnouts!

I'm making them turn all the wrenches, make all the decisions and even do all the dealings with the machine shop and vendors.

Wonder what color they will paint the block :)?

So it turns out it wasn't hydro-locked after all...  Number three rod was friction welded to the crank!  The learning experience here was that some times you really have to wail on things with a hammer to take them apart.

Next lesson will be how hard it is to find a usable 22r crank in Montana.

Got the call from the machine shop today.  One of the mains spun bad enough that the mains would have to be cut down and line honed.  An extra $140 and more if it had to be welded up.  That puts the block out of service as far as economic feasibility goes.

At church Sunday one of my buddies that's into derby cars said he want's me to come pull a 20r that still spins nice out of a Celica GT he has. It hasn't been spun out yet so we should have something we can work with. We can just have it too which is way cheaper than line honing.  He is getting out of Toyota for derby cars after getting spanked by a chevy Lumina.

So, to be continued...  ;)
