Project Family Wagon!
« on: Aug 18, 2015, 05:20:23 PM »
Well About a month ago i found out that me and my beautiful wife are expecting our Third child.  :welcome: Little one.

So i Now have a 4 year old, a two year old, and third on the way. No way am i fitting three car seats into the vw or my Pickup.

I tossed around The Idea of a second gen runner, but thats a tight squeeze in the back. So The search was on for a FJ80

And i found one!

Its A bit rough, as you can see the bumper is bent and paint fading. Its A 1993 W/ the 4.5, disk brakes all the way around and full float rear.

All the windows work and sunroof does too!

Needs the seat gear the always falls off on the drivers seat, and the drivers seat also has some rough spots.

But the big issue is the motor, It runs but has a loud tick. I pulled the valve cover and found the lash is way off but but not the source of my tick.

So i pulled the pan. Found a handful of timming chain guide in the pan. After much reading and pricing Im a little bummed about the cost of everything on the 4.5 :rivers: As well as the fact that you have to pull the head just to service the timming chain.

After pricing everything out, im looking at at least 2k to just repair this motor. Let along rebuild it top to bottom as i would want to do if i pulled it all apart

So Drum roll please, After the green light was given by the wife i am on the hunt for 5.3 Vortec and a 4l60E!

Priced a few out today and for between 2-3K I can get the 5.3 4l60e pcm smog crap and wiring harness.

I am doing as much research as i can and need to keep it CA smog legal. Talking to the guys at valley hybrids, they have done several and kept them Ca smog legal so im picking there brain as much as possible.

I will be using the AA Adapter to go from the 4l60e to my H2fa case. 1500 OUCH!

But seeing as the 4.5 gets 10-14 Mph and has low power, 2-3 grand to freshen it up sound terrible to me. So late model 5.3 16-20 MPH and 265HP Stock sound awsome!

Anyone that has done this please chime in as I could really use as much experience as possible!

Why not run a different case if that adapter is 15 bones. Couldn't you just use a gm case?

I would not be able to run the Stock 241 as its a (LH) Drop. The 4l60e never had a (RH) Drop T-case behind it.

I might be able to find a 205 or something. I would have to adapt to that 4-600 bucks but that's 2-1 and the gear kit is 1600 buck for 3-1

If i adapt my my H2fa case i can The Marlin Crawler Land cruiser 3-1 gear kit in it for much cheaper.

Bang a 1hdt in it.... :burnout:

Id love a diesel swap  :drooling: but the cost on that imported to is around 5-6k :rivers:

Heck yeah, bombed out ppump 12 or 24v off in there and it would tickle your innards for sure. A ve pump would work well and do excellent on fuel. My concern with a cummins swap in cali would be emissions. How do you guys get away with that?

Ugh, snowball effect starts then. What tranny would he run to hold power and still be a slushbox? Over 3k to build a decent 47re and that just parts and doing labor yourself. On the bright side, he could use a 205 case and not need any lower gearing.

Again. I'm no Chev-Yota fan, but the  5.3 Vortec and a 4l60E! or LS swap is the way to go. Cheap, easy to find parts, plenty of power, Can adapt the 4l60 to anything.
If you see it, its for sale.

Man i am a cummins certified tech, I love me a diesel. But the cost is just not effective for me.

A good ls swapped in is between 4-5k driving down the road ca legal

Thats taking into account

1)5.3,4l60e harness,ecm,evap initial cost $2250

2)AA Adapter kit to H2fa 1500

3)Ecm programing 300.00

4)Cats & Exhaust 500?

5)Mic. Steel,Wire,connectors, shop supplies 250.

So i Also pulled the rod caps an mains last night. The results were not good. #5 rod bearing spun about 1-4 of an inch the tang wedged between the block and cap.

I would assume that all that kept it from spinning all the way.

Is this an evil trick by Toyota? Or have these been replaced from several engines? The rod caps are numbered 2,2,2,2,3,3

The Mains are bad too. All the black specs are debris that can be felt to the touch. They feel sand paper!

Look at the top bearing on the #5 Rod :yikes:

My cousin drives an 80. Has engine problems and has a hard time finding a good supply of parts at a good price.

What about a 5vz swap? You would loose a little torque.

1FZ - 212 hp and 275 lb-ft

5vz - 190 hp and 220 lb·ft -- TRD Supercharger would put things right though.

2UZ-FE - 271 hp and 315 lb·ft -- I checked this and they can be had at great prices. 1500-2500 used. Came in land cruisers, 1998-2011 which makes the SMOG easier. I take back everything I said about LS to 5.3. Go with THIS!

Applications:[6]

2003–2004 Lexus GX 470
1998–2005 Lexus LX 470
1998–2005 Toyota Land Cruiser
2003–2004 Toyota 4Runner
2000–2004 Toyota Tundra
2001–2004 Toyota Sequoia
Toyota Racing Development offered a bolt-on supercharger kit for the 2000–2003 Tundra/Sequoia and the 1998-2003 LX 470.

Another 2UZ-FE variation adds VVT-i and electronic throttle control.

Applications:[6]

2005–2009 Lexus GX 470
2006–2007 Lexus LX 470
2005–2009 Toyota 4Runner
2006–2011 Toyota Land Cruiser
2005–2009 Toyota Tundra
2005–2009 Toyota Sequoia
If you see it, its for sale.

I looked into Toyota V8, I like the idea of staying toyota.

Problems are

1) Smog is supposed to be much harder due to evap setup.

2) 100-200 Series landcrusiers are rare! I would need the bell housing and oil pan/ sump from one at the very least.

3)Exhaust manifold drop out placement is not correct.

4)Support for the engines not very abundent and its expensive as well.

5)Finding a low mileage engine.

Not out of the question but these were my concerns

Why not get engine and trans from donor. Makes wiring much simpler as long as it an earlier model. Pre-02 I am reading.

Oil and trans pan you are buying from toyota.

Don't know about the exhaust. Will keep looking.

Agreed. Support isn't as good as some other swaps.

Agreed. Its always hard to find low mileage toyota engines.

If you see it, its for sale.

Just found out i get the cats with the 80,000 5.3 As well

I would love a donor vehicle Toyota, but once again hard to find someone that is willing to part with a Toyota for a good price with low miles.

Pan and bell will cost over 1000 from Toyota ouch.

About to see if they can have the 5.3 ready tomorrow!

Unless prices are crazy high over there, a 5.3 in purnlocla junkyard is 80-1000 with harness and ecm. A cummins can be had for about 1000-1500. Be much cooler without sparkplugs.

I would agree but finding one hasn't been easy. Been calling around for engines round here and a the best a found was a 12v for 2700 with no injection pump. And the like you said snow ball. Trans transfer drive lines ect
