Toyota's V8 twin turbo diesel
« on: Aug 12, 2015, 08:15:59 AM »
Wouldn't it be great if Toyota let these into the U.S.?

The Toyota 1VD-FTV engine is the first V8 diesel engine produced by Toyota. It is a 32-Valve DOHC, with Common Rail fuel injection and either one or two Variable geometry turbochargers.
The single-turbo variant of this engine was first used in Australia commencing March 2007, fitted to the 70-series Land Cruiser range. The engine is available in Australia, India, Central and South America.

The twin-turbo variant saw its first use in September 2007 fitted to the 200-series Land Cruiser wagon, which is available in various worldwide markets. It is also installed in some variants of the Lexus LX570 wagon.

The twin turbo version is rated at 261 HP and 480 ft/lbs. torque and get 22.8 MPG.

A mate of mine has the single turbo version (in a VDJ76). Pulls like a bus load of school boys. He has a chip and exhaust on it an it makes 150kw and 450nm at the wheels.

I'm surprised. I would expected a little more. What kind of economy is he getting?

They're rated at 150 flywheel kw from the factory. But you can put a bigger turbo on them and push 250rwkw ad 1000nm.

He gets 12L/100km all the time. I think that's about 24mpg?

That is just under 20 mpg US, for the power available it sure beats my 22re at the same mpg.

they are not great in factory trim, fairly lazy engine really. a 4.5 liter putting out less than some 3 liters.

Mike, do you think an R series transmission could handle that much torque reliably?

I doubt it.. the H151f isnt rated that high.. be fun to try it though..
