1.5 Ton Floor Jack not enough??
« on: Jul 28, 2015, 09:44:34 AM »
I have never weighed my 4runner but I went to jack it up the other day and my jack isnt working.  I am guessing it is under powered and in the past when lifted the 4runner I have been slowly leaking fluid from the wieght.  I only use to jack up and then put on stands so it is only for lifting the truck, not holding it up.  I have a 1.5 Ton jack.

I'll eventually find a truck scale to go through to check my actual weight but here is what I got.  You guys think I ma over 1.5 ton (3,000lb)

85 4runner
Sliders and Armor front and back (with a shorty stinger)
10,000# Winch
35" Tires
Dual Case
HD Driveshafts (Front and Rear)
V6 Brakes up front
Can-Back Softtop (a little lighter than the hardtop).

I am thinking all that is gonna be over 3,000 lb.
Obvioulsy more when loaded down.

Gonna refill jack and I'm sure it will be fine, just trying to figure out why the jack might be leaking.

It lifts it now.  I filled it with jack Oil (adn Stop leak).  I'm sure the over weight damaged a seal.  It was super low on oil (3.5 - 4oz low).  Topped it off and it lifted it again.  Guess I'll just do this hillbilly fix until I wanna spend more on a 2+ Ton jack.

You are likely around 4200lbs, but the 1.5 ton jack shouldn't have an issue lifting one end.  Once the seals go on a floor jack, they will continue to leak down under load.  The stop leak will help, but you will need to find a rebuild kit for it if it is a quality jack.

Cost me $100 about 10 years ago.  Not sure if its 'qulaity' but ill just use up the jack oil I bought and when its finally done I'll get a 3Ton jack and be done with it ;)

Based on its age, you might be able to find an o-rings kit for it, or find replacements at a plumbing supply store.

I guess when I can't fill with jack oil I'll look into rebuilding, but I need a better jack anyway so it'll probably turn into one of the projects that sits for a few years ;)
