OK new one...

I work for the state of MT as an appraiser.  The information I manage deals with developing market values to determine property taxes. A big expensive system does mass appraisals based on sales of homes.  For the most part it does an OK job, sometimes it's whacky and I have to put things strait.

For crop land out here they use a "value in use" which is determined from a formula using a hypothetical income based on soil type, productivity, cropshare leases and a commodity price based on an Olympic average of the price per acre of spring wheat. This formula is set in stone, law.

This is the re-appraisal year and we had a HUGE increase in the value of farm land due to the high wheat prices we had for a couple years a while back.  This made a higher than normal average ($6.36). This jacked up the values of farm land, despite wheat prices now being back down under $4.00.   The dept sends out a notice letting the land owners know the increase in value, then they have 30 days to appeal, which is a rather time consuming process on our end.  The appeal will only be successful if the owner can disprove the productivity of the soil type, which is rare.

The conspiracy is that when they sent out the notices from the capital was just about exactly when the farmers out here started harvesting.  These guys start up and don't stop for a good month or so until they are done.  They don't have time to look at their mail of file appeals.

Was it "The Man" sending these out at a time when nobody would appeal?

I still got over 300 appeals but most were for home values.  Nice thing is then I can really go to work on the appraisals and make things right if they are out of whack.

Am I "The Man"?

Young guys turning 17-18 keep killing themselves in our extremely rural county.  Always the same type, ranch kids, successful in their ventures with a bright future and a seemingly good family background. Nice kids that you would never expect being troubled in that way.

It's getting to be so much of a similar pattern it's starting to look fishy, as if they get to a certain age and get some revelation or initiation that totally changes them, then they off themselves.

I'm trying to find a common denominator among the parents or something.

^^ Tragic doesn't go far enough. Any common thread.... drugs, social grouping, anything?

Mosty farm/ranch kids, 4H members, families all seem to party together, mostly just drinking though.  The dads are all friends or associates in business, which is the beef industry and supporting businesses such as veterinary, feed, shipping.

I can't think of any that were into the meth or anything.  This is not "The Man", but there is getting to be a creepy pattern to the point you could almost pick 3 or 4 likely candidates for next year and probably get one or two right.  These are families that all seem to love their kids.  The kids seem confident and have less than the typical dose of "teen angst", probably because of their cowboy, outdoor, active, purpose filled lifestyle.

Most of these kids could walk right into the family ranch if they want.  They nearly all have the opportunity for college education if they want something different.  Money is not an issue with these folks.  Their lives are just not that bad, there just has to be some third factor.

OK does anyone else find Pokémon Go creepy? A game that leads people around and from the start collects all your personal information?

This is The Man for sure.  Is this an experiment in trying to control peoples movements?  I don't know.

Not controlling people, just morons.  There's a difference.

A customer came by the other day saying she was going on a road trip soon and noticed a clunking sound after her last service.  I took a little ride with her and noted it was likely something to do with her suspension, which an inspection by a local shop confirmed true when they found a swap bar link end loose.  She called to thank me and to say her son wanted me to know they got to drive to another town and he found 2 pokemon... at first I thought "who f....n cares", then I remembered her son was about 5-6 years old.  I thought that was acceptable

We just had another one of these teenage guy suicides last month.  Same pattern, ranch kid, highly involved in things, had it made etc...  Just like clockwork.

Back on the Pokémon, people are burning gas and traveling for this, spending money, wasting time and not paying attention to what's going on.  With all the civil unrest in the world and the upcoming election this just looks too much like a contrived distraction.  Give everyone a new sucker to shut their mouths and keep them busy while we mess up the world.
