???4L80E trans into 72 Fj40???
« on: May 29, 2015, 12:54:10 PM »
Currently the FJ has a 305, turbo 400, stock case I believe, dana 60 front, dana 80 rear with 5.29s and arbs. Looking to put in a 4L80E. What are the common problems with this?

The 80 is a strong trans. Won't have to worry about it. Reliable and any SBC in front of it will not break it. Will be building it for longevity with a stand alone and reverse manual valve body. Pretty simple work. Question is, what are issues with it regarding install and tcases to use or steer clear of. Right now I believe I have the stock tcase but I am unsure until I can get into it.

There strong that's for sure...........I've seen a few grenade behind a SBC. Was due to lack of cooling and overloaded towing. There weak spots are the input housings and roller clutch. Planetary sets are strong in those. I rebuilt quite a few of those I was a heavy line tech for GM. But behind a 305 I don't see any problems. My buddy had a 4L60E I built for him behind his 1st gen vortec.....mated with an Orion t case. He had clearance issues with the oil pan and front driveshaft. I think there is a company who builds an extended adapter for that issue. He had to run a Nissan style mini drive-shaft flange, but it wasn't very strong. He now has the adapter and will be installing it. I will try and find out who makes it.
