Another 3.0 idle issue
« on: May 18, 2015, 09:06:03 PM »
I have a 93 toyota pickup, manual, with the 3.slow. Here's my issue. When I start the truck it idles fine (warm or cold) and smooth but a little high. Around 1100-1200. Once I drive it and push the clutch in, the rpms drop as they should, but goes down to about 500ish and surges a bit. After about 10 seconds it pops back up to about 1200 smooth. If I rev it in neutral and let it drop, it doesn't surge at low rpm. Only after driving it, even if it's only 10 ft. I've checked vacuum lines and they're all good. I may throw a new TPS on but wondering if there is something else thar may be an issue.

Have you checked the intake tube?  It tends to crack around the accordion section.

Yeah. It's pretty solid and crack free.

Have you checked if the ecu has logged any codes?  If no codes I wouldn't start spending money on electronics.
Check/clean the throttle body, egr valve, might also want to check the vacuum valves.

That was the next thing I was going to do. Clean the crap out of it. ECU shows no codes. I'll clean it out and see if that helps. Thanks

My 3.0 acted like that and died on me a couple times until i figured out i didn't have the air box clamped down (closed).  Might have been unrelated but it never did that again.

Cleaned the intake and adjusted the idle to 800ish. Found a black air valve? thing on the passenger side eng bay that has an electrical connection brittle and fell apart when I touched it. Disconnected the vacuum line and cured the low idle surging after driving it. Runs great now. Don't know what's up with that plastic thing, don't care. Thanks for the advice all

Dingman... just noticed you work at high angle. I bought a few lines from there and I'm from PTOWN as well.

I have worked there for a little over five years now.  Do you still live in paradise?  If so once I get my new truck finished we should all go wheeling!
