2007 Minivan build aka jk unlimited
« on: May 01, 2015, 03:34:12 PM »
So my family is growing and I needed a new rig. My previous rig seen here http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=26920.0 Did not have the room needed to haul the family so i picked this up. Plans are still in the works. The truck is getting sold this weekend so the fun parts should be coming soon. I am thinking at least rear locker, rubi t case, gears, 35-37s and 2.5-3 inches of lift with the normal armor like sliders, bumpers and tube fenders.

Great rig!  In your shoes I would not settle for anything less than 37s and whatever lift you need to clear them. They have a long wheelbase which translates to a poor break over angle. Plus, they just look so good with big tires and 37s is about the biggest tire you really have any hope of balancing well for the street.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

I wheeled longer wheelbase with 35s with no issues. I am about 10 inches shorter now so i should be fine

Love 4-doors, have fun building. I really like Lances from POR. Do not have any details except it has a Rock Jock 60 and 70.

I always love that green.  Reminds me of the color of the cow :pokinit: locally.  But its a good color.

Do some reading before you commit.  I have heard alot about how weak those axles and drivelines truly are.  Even the Rubicon with it's D44 stuff, still very weak.
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!

I think the drivetrain is a lot lower compared to a Toyota so you may find that a similar lift height and tire combo drags a lot more. Toyota seem to tuck everything forward which keeps it forward of the center of break over.

I almost never touched my 85 truck cross member but when I added the dual skid plate in prep for duals I started making contact.

I love me a build JK.

Totally different animal..

And my Facebook

https://m.facebook.com/bullcrew1?ref=bookmark

I build jeeps had 3 jks (1 2dr 2 4dr) built as wild as it gets all custom....I run with guys with 60s and 40s on their jeeps and my Toyota on 37s (4 Dr 03 taco) destroys them.....faster in desert, climbs rocks and waterfalls easy etc...
Don't put a jeep in the same category as a toyota....the jk is amazing but sits vertical so low belly height where toyota sits horizontal so high belly height and low roof...totally different set ups....

Mine on 37s has 27" frame and a small 25" section where the tcase is...
Jeep jk has 20" and 17" along the whole side of passenger side where the gas tank tcase and tranny is....

Still not worried about it.  I am not going to be wheelin it the same
As the Toyota. Mostly local trails up here and maybe a rubicon or fordyce trip.

You'll be fine for that...if you have wheeled your Toyota hard it will be a little frustrating at first...aim tires for the rocks and get it up and on to avoid dragging  belly...they are great rigs loved mine....I need a buggy so my 4dr taco was as close as I get to daily driver / buggy....

To do list for you:
c-gussets
Inner axle sleeves and or truss
Synergy ball joints
Cut the purple with light blue wire under center console and attach a toggle (esp will mess with you when the steering is off from wheeling ) this cuts the loop so you can drive safely without it trying to engage and take over.
Weld washer to frame side tracbar mount 9/16 washer and 9/166 bolt 4" with shoulder
If your night blind swap a 5000k hid conversion cheap and easy

Yeah I planned gussets and a truss. There is a switch for esp that looks like I can turn it off. I will check it the hid conversion. I need armor and bumpers. Looking at the metal cloak stuff for the lift

Will at metal cloak is a good guy...
The switch doesn't do :pokinit:....iif your box allows some slide so steering wheel is off it will be a pain in the @$$....cut the wire at the accelerometer and put a switch in.

If you have any questions feel free to hit me up...I'm authorized with about every vendor out there but have built a lot of these with d60s 40s custom cages bolt in etc....I've built some wild and expensive rigs but can definently address the known weak issues as well as what should be done and what will work...

DO NOT FALL INTO THE YOU HAVE TO HAVE THIS TRAP....
I see so much double spending going on and money put other places before where the customer wanted because they were sold a line of bull crap.
Built another one pretty wild we took him wheeling and a week later he stopped putting money into his jk now he has a Toyota with 39s and 4 link stretch....he keeps his jeep for mild stuff....lol tried to tell him knowing how Rob is that he wanted a toy to crawl and a jeep for the other 95%....he's happy now...lol.

Bottom line if your told something , quoted something, or just have a question your free to call me...619-933-7168 Travis

I have more friends then customers and we all wheel together....I give straight forward answers as well...
I've got 2 at the shop now for pro rock 60s the other is 14 bolt and a 1990 kingpin 69 as well a s a 2 door we are cutting and doing a poly 8" stretch with comp cut...lol that one has 1500 miles on it 2015 he has already bashed the lower sides and body...we swapped 44s in it with lockers and regeared as well lifted it and custom cage and body panels....

I know the axles are weak kinda temped to get a rock jock 44 for it right off the bat. But I think I'll just truss and gusset it and put in some 4.88s and keep it open in the front

Artec ran a d30 with 40s for a year and half...4:56 gears open...and held just fine but did truss and gusset...so it takes a lot of deflection and flex away from the housing keeping things a little more ridgid.
Pro rock is a name....just housing strength which a used d44 with sleeves and c-gussets as well as ball joints will do the same thing for a lot less....the factory lockers are a 4 pin design electromagnet and overall a quality unit...the ones destroyed usually is so done abusing and driving like a a-hole....

DO NOT DRIVE IT LIKE A TOYOTA...it will not handle the abuse. GUARANTEED...

i guess I'll just gear the 30 and keep it open for now with a truss and gussets. I will arb the rear. That will save me some money.

I'd look for. Decent d44 housing and gear it then....I wouldn't spend a dime on the 30 if you plan to upgrade...I'd leave it alone.
A good housing can be had for $200 to $400....or someone who has swapped....I have grabbed front and rear Rubicon axles with lockers that had less than 500 miles for $1800 total....
If you do anything address the cgussets....there's no resell on a 30...

Also the 44s on a jk aren't like wagoner units...better bearings, synergy makes ball joints for them but the lack of manual hubs sucks...spintek makes a manual conversion and with custom shafts it's around $2200..ouch.

Fun in and do trails like the rubicon  and expo type stuff. I'm pretty easy on stuff even with 39.5s I never broke a 44 shaft. I just want to do it right and not buy :pokinit: 2 times
