working toward a W56 to R151r swap - have questions
« on: Mar 22, 2015, 09:01:01 PM »
Aloha, as the title says, I am underway with my plans to replace my '93 W56-e trans with a R151f trans.  My existing transmission is difficult to shift and the late model W56 units are expensive to rebuild.  I purchased a used R151f/tc.  The transfer case is damaged at the crossmember mounting holes.  I plan to install the output shaft from the turbo transfer case into the case currently attached to my w56.  This solves my issue with the speedo, and output flanges.

I have a R150/tc assembly out of a V6 sitting in my garage.  I was planning on using trans/tc combo (with the turbo bellhousing) while I prep the R151f and transfer case.  If this works, my truck will only be down for a few hours (depending upon beer consumption ).

the W56/tc combination is 38-5/16" from front of bell housing to rear output flange.  The bellhousing is 13-11/16.

the turbo/tc combo is 38-7/16 with a 15-1/2" bellhousing.

the R150/tc combo is 37-7/17 with a 15-7/16 bellhousing.

Based on my measurements, the turbo bellhousing and R150/chain tc is about 1" shorter.  I haven't found much info on crossmember fitment.  Anyone have advice?  Has anyone run into issues using stock driveshafts?  What about shifter locations with the top mounted transfer case?  I run only about a 1" lift.  Is it even worth trying to install this rather than working hard on the r151f trans/tc?

Also, my W56 is forward shift like the R151f.  People have reported problems with the shifter locations being moved several inches forward after their swap.  Is this going to happen when replacing the W56-e? Did the crossmember have to be modified?

Finally, if there are any other parts that will need modification, please don't hesitate to respond.

Thanks, 808newbie
