Yeah. We have a 22RE and a 22R powered pickup around here, I'd rather drive the 22RE but I'd rather troubleshoot, buy parts for, or work on on the 22R.

I get that logic for sure
. After downloading the PDF of the factory service manual for the 22re (1993) . Troubleshooting became really dummy proof

Hello! Been awhile since some updates with the build. So here it is. I've been re designing and building the second generation roof rack for chinook. After getting a feel for and the performance of the 1st roof rack.

So here is the new one. Its aluminum this time.
Vs chromed steel. So lighter and no worries for rust.

Is a basket vs a platform with a railing topping out at 5 " from the floor of the basket.

This one is 8'x 5'6" of usable space. And comes in at ~49lbs/ 50lbs
1st gen was 4'x 5'6" of usable space and weighed 42 lbs

No welds . I have a TiG. But no experience with Aluminum yet. And this is almost entirely made of 1/16" wall square tubing. With some ⅛" angle attached to certain zones for strength where it will need it.

Hopefully the pics can answer any questions yall have. But feel free to ask!

Also rebuilt the front drive shaft including the double cardan joint.
Using the kit from NWOR.

(North West Off Road)

Also. As some of you know. There is that large 3/16" maybe hole in the back side of the ball yoke for the double cardan.
I did decide to fill that hole with some jb weld. BUT drilled a smaller 1/16" hole next to it. So grease can still escape from there and not build pressure and want to squeeze through the other side where the rubber ring is on the face of the ball

And for those who enjoy pics of the rig. Here are some from recent camping trip.

Also sitting on new kumho 32x11.5 r15 MT51

And absolutely love them. Performed great on slick rock and extremely quiet !

No there wasn't any hard kinks on it. BUT I'll try and peak inside there sometime. To know for sure. . It looked fine when I was testing it all out though.

Ugh. No nothing yet. I wish had some better ideas What it could be.

Cuz everything timing chain side looks correct.

0⁰ tdc for crank and the cam timing mark is at the 11:45 mark.
I imagine if I had chain stretch,  those would wouldn't line up as they should, am I correct on that?

Just kicking this idea around. No real pulling the trigger ideas going on yet , but , was looking into motor swaps,  just to do some window shopping. See whats out there for reasonable/ cost effective options.

2 biggest things, (which honestly really narrows my options ) I don't want a suspension lift , more importantly I don't want a body lift .

Don't care to make my center of gravity any higher, nor do I want to body lift my camper and cab from the frame, more work than I'm interested in .

So all I've really read that could be my best option would be a 2rz/3rz swap. (Wiring doesn't worry me, and bolt in motor mounts are $150) would just need to figure out the tranny set up,  since I'm currently running an L52 from an 83' so no removable bellhousing

I'm comfortable with how my 22re handles and pulls. The ol girl does alright , and I can still pass on the highway sometimes , but I'm usually cruise'n 60 - 65 mph. And ill be dropping a gear or 2 quite often with ANY kind of obvious incline lol.

Average 17 mpg (I imagine this would go up a little with the swap)

What do you guys gals think?  would be worth it? Its a popular swap! But  100% of the swaps ive read about are still in an empty truck bed or 4runner(granted usually rolling on 33s ~35s)

Not a 5000 lb Chinook on 32s

Tell me of any other ideas you got instead too!

I've read about the 4.3, the 3.4 , om617, 1uz, 4bt , Etc. All mention body or suspension lifts.

Its a lot of pictures . So I hope they can do most the explaining here. But yesterday I found an sr5 gauge cluster at my local yard. And immediately got to work on fitting "the goods" from that cluster to my stock/base model.

Things I swapped :

Tachometer!  Been wanting one of these for years so I can step away from that aftermarket one I've had since the beginning of this project 8 years ago.

Some, not all, of the indicator/ warning emblems, going from "OIL & CHG" to the
"OIL & CHARGE" w/ the representative emblems.

But kept my lower indicator panel w/ "FASTEN BELTS & 4WD"
since I've already installed a "CHECK ENGINE" between the two, when I did the EFI swap.

Also, I wanted to keep my original "TEMP & FUEL" vs the emblems that came with the Sr5.
To do this, I had to cut off the heads of what I guess you could call the plastic rivets maybe , and then for the reattach of that "TEMP & FUEL" trim piece. I did a little plastic welding. See the pics. Its a why dot of plastic on the back.

The trickest part was the Odometer/speedometer/ trip counter blending.

I wanted to keep my original Odometer, but install the trip count from the sr5 cluster. And then using the speedo gauge from the sr5 since it had the cut outs below to read the trip counter.

And finally 2 hour polishing of the clear plastic.  Using a blend of toothpaste/baking soda and warm water.

Id say it came out pretty good! Tell me what you guys think!

I love the look of the first gen sr5 clusters.  :smokin:
I would hate not having a factory tach.

I want to know more about this toothpaste/baking soda polish job. Mine could use a bit of polishing.

Don't think it matters.  But for what its worth.
I used Toms of Maine toothpaste,  baking soda, and warm water. Ratios werent too critical.  But I'd Say around 1:1:1 .
Just aslong as its a "paste compound" . And then just grab a dish towel. And I did circle motions like I was buffing em out.

Then wash off with soap and water, with a sponge.

You'll see results after the 1st 10 min. But I got so carried away and OCD. I didn't realize I was at it for maybe 2 hours ! .

And plenty of elow grease!  Haha

Also, if any one has a idea. But the tach is not working very properly or accurately.  Last night after turning the engine off it stayed at 1000rpm mark.
And while driving . Ill notice its moves some times and other times it just hangs around a certain random rpm (say 2200 rpms as an example)
And then jump a little when I can hear the engine is for sure over 3000 rpms.

Might try cleaning the contacts where the gauge screws into the back of the panel better. But I've looked around the forums. And haven't found much for this generation yota (1st gen pick up)

Any ideas ?

Thanks
