sky's offroad sas kit....
« on: Feb 05, 2015, 07:03:48 PM »
Hello, I'm getting ready to do my SAS...I'm running Sky's offroad stage 4 SAS kit W/ 5" springs, and also their rear matching kit.. the sas kit did not come with the spring pad that levels out the ride height in front,  my question is how crucial is the spring pad? and how much of a difference will it be? from left to right? just want some real world opinions

Thanks in advance                   P/s: its a 95' regular cab pickup 22RE

Just get a piece of 3/8'' flat bar and make your own pad. You need them to be equal. :beerchug:

It makes little to no difference in how it will perform.  I haven't done a truck of your body style, but its just for looks.  So If you have 0 dents and you want a mall crawler then but some 3/8 plate and drill a hole in it.  If you wheel it then bolt them up and go have fun.

sweet deal. I have nothing but good stuff to say about sky's. There a great company to deal with. And not only that, but I hear they have the beat springs on the market......so I'm curious to see how they turn out on your rig. I'm Def gonna watch your build. And for the plate. I didn't put it on my 82' and I didn't see or notice any difference at all.

go to the scrap yard, get a piece of 3/8 plate, drill hole for spring pin, weld short sides, done :twocents:

Thanks guys, Sky's offroad is awsome to deal with and i love how they make most of their own products in house...I didn't think the spring pad  would matter that much. im not to worried about it..... my other concern is if these 5" springs will be too tall, anyone have experience or pictures with 5" springs? my buddy wants them so I may sell um and pickup 4" springs instead..

You can adjust the spring ride height by removing leafs.

I may try that, but my mechanic friend said it will ruin the spring because they were  made specific for that height and removing leafs will weaken  the spring making  for early failure

5' Will be a little tall depending on your tire size.  Ideally, the less lift the better.  But most 5' springs sag after some wheeling.  If you have a front bumper, winch, etc, it helps.  Pulling a leaf doesn't hurt much if you have bump stops.  If you don't have bump stops then they will be alot more likely to reverse, weakening or ruining them.

I'd call sky and talk with them before blindly trusting your mechanic friend.  Being a mechanic doesn't make you an expert on everything automotive.

5 inch springs will be just fine. I have all pro 6inch springs on mine and didn't modify the pack at all. I have no problems and I still had to trim the hell out of my rig to fit 37s. I would run them. I have heard great things from people about sky's springs. Even call down and talk to CJ at marlins he'll tell you the same thing. And yes removing leafs from a pack can cause pre-mature wear they are built to a certain tolerance and rate. They don't put in there tech info......''before install remove leafs until desired ride height and quality''. I would run em.

Oh BTW what rig are you doing the swap on? And yes mines a 2nd Gen runner. The front was not problem to trim, but the rear was super time consuming. I had to plate and seam weld the fenders back together......I could have just left it open, but I wanted it to look clean. And I also had 6'' springs on my 82' I did not have to trim a thing on that but it sure stuffed 35's

Ya I'm pretty confident they will work well. I have been waiting to get feedback from someone who runs them. I'm interested in getting some springs from them as well. I just bent one of my front springs a Lil bit and just waiting to see what I'm gonna install. I think the most expensive thing during an SAS  is the  haha

And another thing. On the front spring hanger is there 2 holes for different axle placement? If so I used the furthest hole and it placed my axle an additional 1" forward. It helps with your steering clearence.
