3.0 V6 knowledge and tricks
« on: Jan 15, 2015, 10:25:57 PM »
:smack: those engineers must have been smoking some good drugs when they came up with some of these weird designs.

changing a timing belt on a truck of a friend, it wouldnt run at all. they replaced the fuel pump and distributor and then called me when they couldnt get it going.
I saw that the thing wouldnt run at all with it timed "right" and when I pulled the timing cover I found this.

now it was pretty obvious how the tension idler came off but there was no obvious way to remove the center idler so after looking up the part and seeing the picture I found that it went on the block behind that tin cover.   Next I found either the upper intake had to come off to  see those bolts or the cam sprockets had to come off so the tin cover would come off.   THAT is what I did to get to the bolts although it was a tight fit but I got the dang thing off :wall:

also note that the three studs that hold the thermostat housing are LONG and go through the water pump and into the block.  (i will get a pic of that tomorrow)

Don't the 3.0s blow head gaskets before you need to remove the center pulley?

I have done the 3.slow timing belt and don't remember it being that bad. Napa sells a nice complete  kit for it. I remover taking the cam pullies  off and it made it easier. I also welded up a fork to allow me to torquestion them back up.

yep, production date is 12-1987.   I really do NOT want to be an expert on this.

When I did mine I took off the cam sprockets then it was a piece of cake. I had a problem with one of the cam sprocket bolts, ended up cutting the flange with a die grinder and it came right off.

we got them off finally. had to build a tool to hold the cam sprockets but they finally broke loose.
