2nd gen 4runner driveline issues
« on: Dec 31, 2014, 03:59:44 AM »
Right off the bat I have searched high and low for an answer to this question.  The problem I have started after a long road trip and while I was in 5th gear in 2wd.  A little background on the truck is sas with chevy 63" leaves in the back and rears up front.  A marlin 4.7 transfer case, 4.88 gears, lockrite locker in the rear, 2.7l swap with a w56b transmission with a square front driveshaft.  What is happening is when in 2wd on the highway under load in 5th gear I hear a grinding noise.  When I let off the gas it goes away and when I coast it goes away.  I had to drive it like this to get home and now it does it throughout the entire gear range 1st through 5th.  Again this happens on under a load, I have tried to troubleshoot the usual by pulling on the driveshafts and such but have found they feel normal.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I won't be able to work on it til I get back on land as I work offshore in the gulf of Mexico, but would like to have ideas for when I get home in mid January.  Thanks.

Could be rear ring and pinions.

Sounds like mine when I lifted it. Long story short, it was my drive shaft. I needed to convert to a CV type shaft even though my drive shaft angles were within limits.

I didn't believe it until after I actually tore my trans and cases apart and found nothing wrong. Finally gave in and changed the rear shaft to a CV type. Had to cut off old spring perches to rotate axle for proper CV angles. No more noise.

Rotating your spring perches may also affect your shock mounts and E-brake cables in some cases. Depends on lift and how much you have to rotate.

This.

I also want to add, check your CV joints on the rear drive line... One might be slowly wearing down which would explain the progression of the noise your hearing. best of luck!

Sounds like the pinion crush sleeve is going out which allows the pinion to actually walk into the carrier and grind on the case only under deceleration, check your backlash.
