Ya, now if they can stay sober enough to complete the work! This has been known to bring progress to a halt in my shop more than once.good luck!!

51. ~~Front Range Off Road Tacoma Brake upgrade (except I used 3rd gen 4Runner brakes)~~

Well just finished up after two very long days. Huge thanks to mudmaster and my neighbor Anthony for coming over and lending a hand. I didn't get much in the way of pictures as it was balls to the walls the whole time and we were covered in grease most of the time. After the first day we got the 25mm upgrade, IFS hub swap, and 3rd gen 4Runner brake upgrade done. Ended up having to grind down the calipers quite a lot to get them to clear my wheels. After it was all said and done the problem with steering right persisted.

This morning I woke up early and got straight into pulling out my current steering box and replacing it with the one that jangelfire sent me (thanks again dude you saved the day). After a couple hours I got it in there as well as adding a new filter to the system. Topped off the system with fluid and bled it. Problem seems to be solved. I've thought that in the past though and it has come back so we will see how this week goes.

When I finished my FJ40 and took it out for a shake down run I had steering box problems develop where it didn't want to turn right. Entirely different box than yours... early J20 Saginaw box... but when I brought it back to the shop that had rebuilt it they found that the large nut on the input shaft had backed off allowing the valve body to spin. It put metal shavings all through my PS system and ruining the hydroboost and PS pump. Good move adding the filter. After that experience I will always have a filter on my PS system.

The hub swap looks good. What is the new width on the front axle?

It matches the wider IFS rear now.

I wouldn't trust THAT filter mounting system.............

Just saying.....

Make a zig-zagging bracket that uses the bolts for the coolant overflow...

Do you have the New Longs or RCV's with the grease fitting on the end? Any concerns going blind and pumping to much grease in.

I have RCVs with grease fitting on the end. They are too new, so I haven't needed to top off yet. Though when I do I'll do 2-3 pumps and call it good.

My old longs used to click when id turn. Id pack em with grease when i had the axle apart and it would stop the noise. I wouldnt be worried about overgreasing it. The extra should just go into the knuckle ball.

So I dropped all my transmission and cases oil. Transmission oil was pretty dark and had a lovely piece of a gear (from the looks of it) attached to the magnet on the drain. Filled everything back up with fresh MT-90.

8 Days....

Have you tried lucas oil stabilizer? It's a bit stickier, and helps the syncros grab without wearing out so much

Did find that my slave cylinder has a bad leak. Going to replace that this weekend.

I don't think the oil being thicker has anything to do with syncro function. Redline MT90 is a synthetic GL4 rated 90wt oil that works great in the Toyota transmission compared to a synthetic 75w-90 gear oil that is GL-4/GL-5. Something in the additives for the GL-5 changes the "slipperiness" and has a negative impact on the syncro function, but they are the same 90wt viscosity.

All I'll say is that you should do some research on the BITOG forums about Lucas products and see what you think. It's possible to increase the viscosity of your oil and quiet noises or dampen the feel of things while still having a negative impact on the performance of the oil.

You've seen the Lucas product that is advertised in the parts stores with the gears that you can turn to see how much better it "flows" to the top of the gears? That product is essentially pure petroleum and there used to be a video on BITOG that showed how it performed in an actual differential turning at normal speeds. It was so thick that it actually foamed which is just about the worst thing a lubricant can do because it puts air pockets in the fluid.

Take a look and see what you think. There are some Lucas supporters on the forums and the support, or lack there of, is likely product specific.

I'm using 80w-90 in mine... I try to stay away from the synthetic, but maybe I should switch over... I'll check it out, thanks for the heads up

Well, I just can't win. Noise coming from truck while driving. Thought it was my calipers still hitting the wheels but it stops when I throw in in to neutral and coast. If it was the calipers they wouldn't care if it was in gear or not. They would grind on forward progress either way.

Sound coming from rear diff? They like to make noise when on the gas but not so much when coasting. At least my experience

Install better speakers turn up to 11 and go.
